How long to make decent income?

I'm getting around half of that and raking in 180,000 views a month. I think it might take a while to break $500 a month but hopefully one day I will! :)

Been in YouTube for 3 years. 2012-2013 was my highest point earning at least $100/month. That's 80K views/month. With a terrible 60/40 cut. NBow I'm barely making $50 with less than 30K views/month.

I suppose if you receive 12,000 monetized views per day, you'd atleast earn $500 or so.

Good insight! Yeah I still have a ways to go! haha

I made that in a month after about 2 years of YouTube. Now im consistently making that and last month was my most successful month yet. I only have around 23k subs so im not exactly huge, yet ;)
It really depends on your CPM of course and certain months are alot better than others.

Lots of good advice already here but I'll add my piece since we make decent coin. Getting to your financial goals could happen in a short period of time if something manages to go viral, but that's not likely to happen. Here's the key:

You have to build an audience and be consistent, release material regularly that is good enough to bring your audience back over and over. That's actually the best way to make reliable income anyway--the "flavor of the week" viral type video could go cold and your stats could drop off. Build a strong following with good consistent material.

Awesome and if you don't mind me asking, how long did it take you to reach $500 a month?

I'm probably not the best example because we monetized only after we were already getting lots of views. So we made over $500 the first month we became monetized. But I had been uploading videos for about 2-3 years before that.

Wow that takes patience! Congratulations on your success
