How long should my content be?

I like the 8-12 minute range. For what I do it seems to work perfectly. I tested longer videos but it was no good.

Yeah, just kinda echoing what other people have said here but short and good is better than long and bad. Just when you're editing try and make the best video you can. Wether that's 2 minutes or 20 minutes will depend on the video. Just focus on making great videos and don't stress the length. As a general rule though I'd say shorter is normally better. Good luck with your channel!

Ermm, I think it depends on what type of video's you're doing. If it's more edited highlights, then anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes is alright in my opinion. But if it's more of a lets play style then I think you've got the best length of time already.
I'm not a gamer on youtube, but I am planning on starting a channel with my friend along side my normal vlogging-based channel, and those are the length's we said we'd try to make our videos whenever we start the channel.

But it comes down to ultimately what you think is right and what you think best suits your personality/style, because it's your channel, sure you've got to think about the viewer, but you're the one making the content. So whatever you feel is best my friend :)

Good luck!

I would say if its a tutorial video, or an episode in a series, try 10-15 minutes.

If its a "funny moments" episode, a montage, or something with different clips, aim for 5-10 minutes

As long as you can hold their attention.
At first I would go short a sweet until you earn their trust.
I know personally I will almost never click on a video that's 4 or 5 mins + unless I know the channel already.
I mean I watch 20+ min videos from Marvel Explains now that I know what to expect from him.

Lure them in , make them like you , then you can do an hour if you feel your viewers are on board
I agree! I'd never click on a long video from someone I didn't know, unless the title or thumbnail would be VERY interesting.

Heres another idea, spread out the topics of that 20/30 minute video over a few shorter video's. That way, you can upload one shorter bit (say 10 minutes) every other day or every day. But the smartest thing to do is have a look at the viewer retention and act accordingly :)

Putting your feeling and own idea's in your channel is great and all, but if your viewers are not watching more than the first 3 minutes, the other 17 are a waste of time filming and editing :)

At the end of the day it depends what type of content of gaming you would like to do for ur YT channel. If you take that fact into account then you be able to decide what type of length you want your videos to be. For let`s play videos I would ummm 15-2o mins long roughly. But other types of gaming content may be long such as reviews which have some that can last longer.

It's good to see people's responses on this subject as I was about to ask the same question. I don't do games, but I have an extremely hard time limiting my videos to under 10 minutes as the characters I do need that much time or longer to build the backdrop for their stories. I feel as if I can't produce good comedy "skits" unless they are at least that long. In fact, I have to trim most of them down from 20 minutes or so and I feel bad about leaving out some of the content I would have liked to include.

However, I've also heard that many people don't like longer videos due to several factors...attention spans, video content that rambles, etc.

@roaryratcoon I can see why its hard, but I'd really try and aim for that. I think you will improve your skill a lot by trying to work it in those 10 minutes.

I watched your tea video and my personal opinion was that the intro took to long. You lost me at 1:36/1:38. "Just a dude looking in to the camera funny and acting awkward" was my thought. I clicked to a few other bits in the video but was not sure where you where going at.

So one tip I'd like to give you for the above video, is try to catch me sooner. Work in something that will make me want to watch the rest. Thats my personal opinion tho :)

I always like the sketches from the channel FilmRiot. They work them in the normal items when it comes to sponsortime or just having something to use the tutorial on. Since they use them for the sponsor time, they have to really work in the characters and jokes in a short time. It might be a good source of inspiration for you. If thats your style that is.

EDIT:
Cant post the links, but try looking for Film Riot Bomb Prop. The skit is at 0:22 and the fast motion tutorial has a nice example.

Good suggestion. I'm so used to making 90+ minute stuff for film festivals and the like that I almost feel as if the story isn't dragged out I'm missing key components to build up the characters story. I'd love to condense things into 2-3 minute videos and will try to shoot for that as a goal.

Its really up to you! I prefer to make my videos around 15 minutes each. but its hard ti make videos that are that short with a lot of meaning!
