How long does it usually take to be a successful YouTuber?

Assuming you followed all of the necessary steps as a YouTuber, like setting up a good channel, uploading on a consistent schedule, making awesome vids, etc. How long will it take for you to reach that point where you have a solid audience and earns a living out of YouTube? Is there like a usual number of years that keeps on popping as you observe other successful YouTuber?

Thanks in advance for answering! XD

I'm assuming depending on who you are, anywhere from 1-6 years. Depends on how well you promote too. I notice a lot of channels with great content that are still rather small a year in.

What do you define as "successful"? Your definition of "earning a living" is also important... Ex: if your getting approximately $1,000 per million views, how many million views would you need to eat and have a roof over your head? My goal used to be 500K subscribers to "be successful" but now that I've hit that, I still don't feel big enough ("the grass is always greener") as one with 1 million.. haha.

Also, just because you are growing at a certain rate doesn't mean that rate of growth will be consistent. You will have bad months and good months, and sometimes growth could even taper off, even with consistency and awesome uploads. Some YouTubers grow extremely slowly.. then years later they'll get a hit video and their growth will skyrocket. Some YT'ers grow consistently over many years, and their growth can slow. That can depend on current YouTube trends too.

Anyway, you can use projection tools like Socialblade to see where you will be in the next ___ months/years but that is only calculated by your current rate of growth. It'll fluctuate :)

It depends what u mean by successful i guess. It also depends on other stuff like video quality, patience, upload schedule, type of videos, promotion...

Unless you get lucky and your channel explodes over night I've seen that many it takes anywhere from 3-5 years. But it's getting more of an uphill battle every day with more people getting into it. Also if thats the only reason you want to get into it I don't really suggest it. Do it because you enjoy it, or else you might get discouraged very quickly.

As long as it takes.

There's no formula of time spent = success, although I will say the longer you work on something, in general the better you're going to get and the more opportunities to succeed will come along.

Think about it, a channel concept with no potential for growth will never succeed, even if the videos are technically proficient. Somewhere, someone is probably making great videos about antique typewriters, but that's not something that's likely to reach mainstream widespread appeal any time soon.

Thanks guys for answering! HAHA! I'm not asking to measure my own success..I mean I don't mind waiting long years for that to happen..I just really love creating videos. But telling my mom that would only make her discourage me more on pursuing my dreams of becoming a YouTuber. So I needed a solid number to tell her. And you're answers gave me an idea what to tell her and now she understands. hehe. THANKS! XD

If she wants solid numbers, good luck. As of right now, the average is about 4 years, and that's going to go up in 4 years.
