How long does it usually take to be a successful YouTuber?

It takes as long as the time necessary for the creation of your first gateway videos. Than you are pretty much done. :)

Fastest I've seen someone do it is 20 days. I've watched a channel on here (don't want to mention names) that got super hated on for doing a foreign language channel that created videos very close to a popular English language channel and within three weeks of starting he was getting 100K views a day. I've seen multiple channels get to the 1MM views a day mark within 6 months. As an average though. If someone's making good content in a popular niche - gaming, top tens, pranks, beauty, etc, it's going to take about 40 videos and one year.

It varies, I have seen channels grow immensely in very short periods and others which take a long time, I have seen terrible quality channels outperform better quality ones within niches and better quality ones outperform poorer quality ones, a lot of the time I think its all about luck and timing, success isnt always crafted on YouTube IMO.

All depends on when lightning strikes. Most channels take years but some are overnite like the lotto for filming somebody in the bathroom in a humorous way.

It's all mainly luck to get seen then after you get seen it all depends on your quality to hook people onto it. SO it is dependent on all different factors. Some take a couple months some a couple years. Some have spent 3 years but still under 100 subscribers so time isn't the only factor all on quality and luck.

I really started a focused campaign to grow my channel in 2009 but it still took a couple year for it to gain any real traction.

It depends on luck to be honest, some people get lucky some people don't, there are some good timings and bad timings

How long is a piece of string? If you're lucky, you might achieve relatively quick success, but for the majority of people it's a hard, long effort - many get discouraged along the way.

My best advice (and how I feel about it) is to just do YouTube as a hobby. If you are successful, then that's a bonus. I've had a lot of viewers say that they are surprised I don't get more views - I think that's largely down to the fact that I am covering older games at the moment.

'Just keep swimming' ;)
