How exactly does adsense work?

I'm completely confused... so we pay money to appear higher in google/youtube searches?

ie: I pay money (If I'm the high bidder for a word) and I show up first in those search results? I have a sponsor paying me to use adsense to get my video more hits and help get their name out there. Just confused after reading everything....
 
Normally Adsense only allows you (as a Youtuber with a smaller amount of subscribers) to make money from your videos. That's it. I don't think that you as a smaller Youtuber could afford being sponsored by Adsense. Besides, on which place your video shows up in the search results mainly depends on the watch time (amount of minutes your viewers watch your video).
 
It'd be better to search for "adwords explained" because that is what you're describing - not adsense.

Also a quick search here on YTtalk brings up lots of information. Type in "adwords" top right in the search bar and tick "search titles only"
