How do YOU guys promote your channel?

In my experience, I don't think that your real life friends are best for youtube growth. The best people for growth are the random strangers that you find on the internet (I'm actually not being sarcastic). They have absolutely no incentive or personal bias to like you so they will give you an honest opinion. If they like your stuff, they will spread the word.
I'm currently trying the google adsense approach to spread the word about my channel. At first, I had it set so that everyone saw my ads. I got a lot of views, but no responses. Then, I decided to change my advertising strategy. I have it now set so that only people interested in gaming will see my stuff. I've gained one sub so far with this new tactic. The problem with adsense is that it can vary widely bewteen users. I've seen people gain like 80 subs in a day from it. I've gained one. XD If you choose this approach, I recommend that you only show ads to people that are interested in what you create, and to work hard on a good advertisement. Best of luck!

yeah ive been thinking about advertising on youtube as well probably gonna do it soon

Well, firstly, I create close bonds with groups across multiple platforms and social networks. I especially use really close, obscure, underground websites because you can then obtain closer relationships and more people will actually care to sub AND view your videos.

Remember this, views are for those who want to make money and/or get attention. Subs are for those who want fame and/or to be remembered. That should help you choose your preference.

I used Interpals and DeviantArt mainly.

But I did find Instagram useful as I had already gained 500 followers there, but I got more likes on the post than actual subscribers. I then turned to a more personal platform (FaceBook), and through there I got people who really cared to watch my videos and spread the word.

I hope that helps!!

The usual stuff, Twitter, G+.
When I do motor racing footage I do go around the paddock and hand out cards to the drivers. They love to see their cars on Youtube and some cheap cards online only cost a couple of pounds for 250 ;)

Yeah it's interesting to see how everyone is promoting their channel - I guess there is no set method for success.

I've been using Twitter, Tumblr and Reddit so far and Twitter has proved the most effective although I think I need to find the right sub-reddits for my vlogs.

I am tempted to pay for some advertisements though - the question is how much money do I put in?

I don't find twitter helps much ! I also don't have a ton of followers .. do you use certain hashtags? ? How do I find people to follow that would be interested??

Reddit,Facebook,Twitter are most popular ones if you try to promote your channel on facebook make a page of your youtube channel then invite alot of people to like it then when you post something they will click if the tumbnail is nice enough on twitter you just post time to time and reddit idk really much abt it but its worth doing that too (i started post on reddit like 2 days ago)
