How do they do it?

A few things:
1. They probably record content days ahead of it's release.
2. May have more than one computer. One to record, the other to render.
3. Editors? Some channels pay people to edit the videos on their channel. It's a possibility.
4. Their videos aren't 3gb big. (Seriously bro. Take a look at your video render settings because that's ridiculous.)

Probably more factors to this. Though this is the main ones I'm thinking of.

Yeah I followed a few tutorials I found on YT for rendering and compressing. Guess I gotta find some different ones lol. I just kinda figured that was the smallest size I was gonna manage but everyone here is saying that's way too big so I will do some more research into compression.

500mb for 10 minute video top? That's not true. I am working with after effects mostly. Sometimes 3 seconds video is about 16gb full HD.

Try to re-render it in a different codec or format and then run it through handbrake!
I work with After Effects for every video I make, you don't upload directly from after effects to YouTube. After your FX are done you compress the video to a usable format and upload it.[DOUBLEPOST=1399066353,1399066273][/DOUBLEPOST]
My GoPro videos are huge compared to other cameras. Some shorter high quality videos reach the GB mark sometimes.
yes uncompressed they are large. but after you edit and compress them they shouldn't be that large. I shoot on RED Epics here for work. After we are done and the video is done the file size is under 500mb for 1080p.

What's a good compression program that won't affect the video quality?

I edit using the Adobe CC Suite. Included in the suite is Adobe Media Encoder.
In that I use h.264 format and vimeo HD 1080p preset.
It smashes the file size and keeps the quality superb.

If you don't have Adobe, look into the h.264 format settings and tweak it until you find something you like.
