Ross from GameGrumps made a video specifically about animators in a small pickle. He is trying to create a group for animators to get noticed and attract views. His channel is called RubberNinja and the video is called Does Independent Animation Have a Future on Youtube
 
Possibly. As a member of the gaming community, I'm always torn with the idea that we should have shorter videos. The longer production times encourages me to make it at least 10 minutes long I think.
 
Do I get this right that YT prefers a long watch time simply so that the user stays longer on their site? Obviously someone will only sit through a 10 minute video if it's really good, but if they watch a short video that is also really good, they'll probably watch the next short video and the next... Same thing, but with more ads.
 
There is more than watch time only. It's not official but I think high retention rates for long videos are weighted higher than for short ones.

YouTube desires longer watch time; correct. But not necessarily watch time on individual videos. The goal of any website is to keep the visitor on the website for as long as possible.

There needs to be a balance between content and ads. Believe it or not, Google's plan isn't necessarily to show more ads. They actually don't have enough ads to show on every video. Besides, a viewer wouldn't want to see an ad every 3-5 minutes on every short video.
