There really isn't much of a difference. You get a G+ Page for your channel, where you can post your videos to your audience (Much like posting them on FB or Twitter). You don't have to use it, I rarely use mine. You have the ability to change your username (Though your URL will not change). For example if you go to my channel, it says "KevinArnoldussen - KGATV", though my url is just KGATV. Also channels that are connected have a greater chance of being higher up in searches. The only down side is that in order to change your avatar, you got to change it through G+. But it also keeps all of your avatars, so you can switch anytime without having to save the pictures.
