looking for a free easy to use editing program that i can use on my hp windows 8 laptop. I currently use the editor on youtube but am looking for a better one.

Good luck getting a free video editing software that is actually 'good'. Your best bet is to save up 200-300 dollars and purchase a copy of Sony Vegas Pro 15.

Not true at all, plenty of great free stuff.
Lightworks isn't at all user friendly, HitFilm 3 Express is noob friendly and free.

Hitfilm 4 Express (newest version of 3 Express, which Styxie said) is great.

It's what I use, and it's very user friendly. It also has loads of features, more than enough for a newer YouTuber.

Wooops yea 4's the one! Really good software, especially for free!
There's also DaVinci Resolve's video editor.

Only problem with Lightworks is that the maximum resolution you can render to YouTube is 720p, unless you pay for the Pro version.

Hitfilm 4 Express, the only problem I feel is that there's too many visual effects that are added into the program that dosn't allow you to simply just render raw video or make cuts in between.

Both are a good start, but if you're looking for professional recording equipment specifically for your camera or youtube channel, programs like Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas Pro, and Adobe Premiere are the way to go.

Edit: Rendering on Hitfilm 4 requires a lot of CPU and Memory, plus you have to PAY for packs of special effects, when in other programs you can make them yourself.

I recommend these programs if you're looking to make simple videos, but I do not endorse them at all due to the low creditability and time constraints that it causes to make one simple video.

If you're going for a lot of professional effects, then of course you'll need some paid software.
But, for free, Hitfilm 4 Express is the best, afaik.
And in my experience, it doesn't require too much cpu/ram.
I render ~15 minute 720p60 videos, with loads of composites/cuts/effects/things in, and it takes like 40 minutes on my FX-6300 @4.3ghz (which is a budget 6-core CPU, so it could be a lot better), with 16gb of DDR3-1600 ram.

CPU usage goes up to ~90, but I can still comfortably watch a YT video, or play a less-demanding game (Minecraft, Endless Sky) whilst rendering.
Ram, I don't pay a whole lot of attention to, but I don't believe it goes past 60%

Too many visual effects? Don't use em then! Final Cut Pro is terrible, avoid. Premiere Pro all the way. Rendering on any software requires a lot of CPU/RAM/GPU... :s
