I guess it all comes down to personal preference. There are plenty of YouTubers out there who have their faces on screen, and plenty that don't. I think in terms of interacting with your audience it adds an extra level of personalisation to the channel, but in my opinion it's not really necessary to succeed, especially for smaller channels. I have never shown my face on video and I have always managed to keep gaining subscribers and views on my channel, so I think it all boils down to personal preference.
