Extremely interesting situation I'm in - an offer to YouTube full time

Hi everyone I want to seek advice from you, so I run a channel I've been YouTubing for under a year and have nearly 10k subs and by my 1 year anniversary I should have around about 15k. I don't want to say who I am, but I have a channel to do with grooming and hair. The other day I had an email from a CEO of a huge beauty brand asking me to meet him for lunch/an interview. It turned out to be a legitimate company as I visited their offices and met with the staff, this company are big and distribute loads of products for huge and I mean huge name youtubers. Now they have offered me a full time job and I've been told to create them a channel on men's hair which is pretty much what I do right now. It will be based around their new products that are about to launch soon. It's basically a dream job youtubing full time and I will be in charge of growing this channel like I did mine. HOWEVER the CEO has told me I can't use any other hair products as I will be a brand ambassador for their product which I accepted, I won't allow them to tell me what I can advertise on my channel when it comes to fashion videos. His informed me that as the channel I'm
being payed to work on will grow big, they expect that my channel will grow to as I will be presenting/hosting the channel and he wants 20% of my earnings. Is this normal and what would you do in my situation? How do I inform them that I want a clause in the contract that if I stop working for his company I don't want them to take any earnings from my channel?

What happens if this new channel doesn't take off? What are the stipulations in the contract for that? How long is the exclusivity with this brand expected to be for? If the brand's channel doesn't work out, do they own anything of yours on YouTube?

I would expect that the channel they own, they should get all the earnings from, and not a split with you, unless you get an 80% split of the channel they're asking you to build? That seems odd. Or are they expecting you to give them 20% of your own channel's earnings?

This is all the sort of thing I would definitely bring to an employment and/or entertainment lawyer, to make sure you're not getting into a contract that may bite you in the long run. However, if it is an opportunity to work for a brand for money, congratulations! That's most excellent, and shows your hard work has really worked out.

I would ask if you are allowed to have alternate channels that wouldn't be affiliated with the one they are seeking to partner with. But congratulations on being recognized for your work~

Thanks for the response, I will mention to them if the channel does not take off that their company won't be able to control what products I put on the channel. They've explained that I take nothing from their channel apart from the wage they are paying me, and they want 20% of my earnings as they expect my channel to grow along with theirs. Thank you! and for the advice also, I will consider maybe talking to a lawyer maybe and seek advice from them!

I don't know about that. So they pay you to use a product they make like a sponsored video but they want 20%. I mean for videos that require film crews, props and more I would understand the 20% back but when it comes to a beauty channel its just you as far as I know.

Also, to market the product they make in your channel could be a bad idea because what if it doesn't work out between you and the company. Then they could take your channel.

Also do they just pay you per video per product or for every video related to it?

One last thing is how do they know the channel will grow big.

It honestly sounds too much like a corporate job to me. If you need a job, then go for it.

congrats on your channel growth, but yes as others have said, get more info, i would have thought a company like that would rather pay you for product reviews or placement in your videos. that sounds more like what I would expect

Allow me to explain clearer, so I will be fully employed by them to grow their channel and then i will also still work on mine, and the only hair products I can use on my channel is the products they use as my job title will be brand ambassador. And thats my concern if their channel doesn't work out, although they have hair barber shops all of London in huge shops, so they have the backing and funding. Im just worried and dont really want them getting involved in my channel.

Unless you're actively plugging your personal channel on the new one you will be working on, there's no reason to expect your channel will benefit in any way. So they shouldn't be entitled to any percentage at all. As for being a brand ambassador, what they've basically done is block you from working with the competition. So you're signing over exclusivity to them in that field without getting any additional compensation. Neither seems right to me. If you still want to proceed, negotiate and make sure your interests are protected.
