That's because the NTG-2 is needs Phantom Power and the H4N is no good for that.

NTG-2 has a Double A batteries self phantom option.
NTG-3 needs phantom power also.
but ntg-3 with zoom h4n has no problem.

There are several phantom powered mics that don't work too well with the h4n, batteries or not.

I own the ntg-3 and use it weekly. I have tried to use it with the H4n several times and the output is insanely low. It's been an issue with the H4n for several different phantom powered mics.

I use a Rode mic the Tascam DR-05. Works really well together.
