DSLR Users, what mic do you use?

It REALLY depends on what you're doing with the camera and the mic. Can you be specific?

I currently do sound/audio for our web series and a much bigger indie film production. I use a $12,500 sound kit on set and have spent a LOT of time on the subject of mics/audio recording. I also stream on twitch and use mics/mixers for that.

If you're going to actually do any kind of a Film, most of this stuff suggested isn't going to work great.

Give me the details and I'll give you some info.
I'm planning on doing a few things so far, first is a vlog style series for which I think something like the Rode or any decent shotgun would do, second is interviews (possibly) indoors/outdoors. I was thinking a lav mic would do for that..And if I can find some willing people, maybe a few shorts :)
But yea, anything that's good value for money that would be suited for any of those tasks would be great if you have anything to recommend. Willing to buy a few different mics/bits of equipment :)
Thanks <3

What's your budget exactly?

Also, a lot of folks get confused on what a "shotgun" mic is. A shotgun mic is not for recording sound from a distance. The name refers to its hyper/super cardioid pattern. ALL microphones used for recording should be within 18" preferably less, of the subject's mouth to do it right.
Shotgun mics are used to block out more peripheral sounds basically. Typically I only use my shotguns outside (they need a cover/dead cat wrap to keep out wind noise) or inside where there's a ton of ambient noise, like a diner.

My definition of shotgun mic was only 40 percent false! Hah, thanks for clearing it up, you learn something every day!
As for budget, I kind of plan on buying things as I need them as to not spend too much at once..I'd say maybe 600 ish pounds [900 dollars] as a middle ground, possible to go a bit higher when I have some more steady income..

Ok that's plenty to work with man.

Let me look around tonight and I'll get you a list of stuff to look up and what it's for in relation to what you want to do and I'll post it here.

Looking at his channel, his vids are mostly game commentaries. So I don't think $12k worth of equipment is for him. Just simple and affordable suggestions for the game commentator.

That's just a little hobby for now, I want to branch out :)
Obviously not 12k, that would be overkill! :)

Yeah I asked and he stated what he was going to do and it's a lot more than gaming. If you read up you can see what he's wanting to use this new equipment for.

Styxie, I'm looking some stuff up for you. Watch for a post tomorrow with some good info for you at several ranges within your price range.
