Dont forget to subscribe.

They say it because it works. Try it out once and you'll get more new subscribers than people who unsub out of annoyance. It's strange what works on YouTube. I had lunch with a corporate channel/network CEO and he told me the most effective way of picking up more subscribers with virtually no extra work is to put a subscribe link in the first line of the description. It doesn't seem necessary since the subscribe button is usually within 2 inches of that link, but I tend to listen to people who get 350 million views per month. Results from our gaming channel indicate he's correct.

I hear you but i find it annoying and in the interest of the 1 other person who may be annoyed by it i wont partake in the practice, i would say "If you want to see when my next video comes out, you may subscribe", if it applies though.

That's the best thing about YouTube. You don't have to do what everyone else does. If you find a better way to make people subscribe that isn't annoying and intrusive, go for it-and maybe we will all be copying you in a few months. We rarely remind people to subscribe, but its definitely there on major collaboration videos with plenty of traffic.

im not trying to make anyone subscribe honestly, subscribers is just a number of people who want to know the exact time the new vid comes up ^^, if i wanted just subscribers i could have mass advertised like most.

In business it's called a "call to action". If you want someone to do something you ask them to do something. I don't see anything silly about that. However, you have to do what feels right to you.

Indeed, don't forget that to us Youtubers it's pretty obvious to subscribe a channel, but anyone could be watching your videos so having it in there isn't that silly actually. It's the same with my tutorial videos: I used to get tons of questions in the comments below my video, making it impossible to respond to them all without missing some. So I encourage my viewers to ask their questions to me on Twitter, with a annotation link to my Twitter profile. It really helps, get much more questions at Twitter now, same as my followers and my Klout score goes up because of the interaction I make with my viewers. The thing is, some people just need to be reminded on some stuff, and so that's what we do.

If we were all following standard advertising methodology, we would mention subscribing three times during short videos.

I do the "make sure to subscribe so you don't miss any videos" bit at the end of my 3 minute editorials. I don't bother with it on my longer gameplay videos. I figure if someone is watching me do something for 15 minutes at a time, they're probably already subscribed.

But then, I also preface and end my editorials with a request for comments asking people what they thought about the topic. Which resulted in way more comments than before I altered the format.
