Does asking viewers to subscribe actually matter?

Hello All!

Do you verbally ask your viewers to subscribe? Most content creators recommend doing this, but I have this obsession with making my videos very "tight/clean" and not muddling them with 15 extra seconds tacked on at the end to ask people to do certain things. Obviously this isn't really that big of a deal, but I know people that say you must do this.

Charlieissocoollike is a YouTuber that used to advocate never adding annotations or asking to subscribe, because he assumed people will like, comment and subscribe if they want to. On the other hand, I've seen how it can be beneficial, so what do you think? Do you spend an extra 15-30 seconds on every video asking people to comment, like, and subscribe? And how much do you think it matters? Let me know!

A call to action can definitely be beneficial. The most common story that I've heard from people that added them to their videos is that they'll occasionally get comments from people talking about how they forgot to sub before being asked, despite really liking that channel's content. I'm getting ready to add a call to action to my videos.

We always have an outro with 2 end screens, bonus clip and so on. However we never verbally say it, subscribe or smash the like button or anything other than bye. We normally take the p**s out of all that because I believe people will subscribe if they want too and the end screen is just a quick way to offer the chance without pushing into people's faces.

out of pure habit I do it I think it all depends i've heard people say that they hate when people ask you to like, comment and subscribe I have also heard people who say that they don't mind one way or the other so no I don't think it matters people will likely subscribe if they like your content not because someone asked them to. btw had to subscribe after seeing your how to adult video that was funny!

I like your videos man. They are very chill and very professional. One of the better new comedy channels I've seen like legitly, I suspect you'll be hitting it big if ya keep it up! Besides that, it's basically called "call to action". People are weird and sometimes do need to be reminded to do things like subscribe, or maybe just because YOU told them too, they'll do it. It doesn't hurt unless you're like OH YES REMEMBER TO SUBSCRIBE PLEASE. Just be cool about it, hope you guys enjoyed the video, subscribe if you'd like to see more (they obviously have to see your video updates). If you go about it nonchalantly then yeah I don't see a problem with it. I never say it but I do have an outro card that says "Subscribe"[DOUBLEPOST=1468174519,1468174387][/DOUBLEPOST]

Thank you both so much! I truly appreciate it and I'm glad I can make you laugh. I think for the future I will definitely have a professional slate/end card for all of my call to actions, and will only result to verbally asking if there is something very specific I would like to drive traffic to. And If I do so, I'll probably just try to keep it short and sweet. And casual. Thanks for your help!

No problem. Also I LIVE in Chicago so yeah, I have to deal with that s**t all the time. What is life.

I've never liked doing it and I've never liked anyone else asking me to. Even if I love a channel, like Vsauce, and can watch several of their videos in one sitting, it doesn't necessarily mean I want to be notified whenever they put a new one out, and that's the only purpose of subscribing. When I'm in the mood for Vsauce, I'll search it out and watch what looks interesting. But if I subscribe to something, it means I want to watch every video they put out, as soon as they put it out, so I don't miss one. Like the Death Battle series from Screw Attack or RWBY from Rooster Teeth. Asking me to subscribe isn't going to suddenly make me want to keep up on every video someone puts out.

My channel trailer is the only video that asks anyone to subscribe, and it's kind of a threat like a, "We can see everything you do, so you better subscribe" kind of a thing. The only reason I tell people to subscribe in my trailer is because that is one of the main purposes of the trailer.

The only time I suggest that people subscribe is in replies to their comments. I get a lot of requests for my channel and I do most of them. I upload them, schedule them for the next date I have available to be published, tell the person requesting it that it is done and when it will be uploaded, and I add it to my video schedule that is linked to on my main channel page and "About" page. I don't exactly ask them to subscribe, but the system I have set up makes it so that subscribing is the best way to get notified when the video they requested goes live.

I'm new (only 2 videos so far) but I'd been giving this one a lot of thought. I don't think I want to ask viewers to like/comment/subscribe, because presumably the people in my audience know how to use youtube (and if they don't, well, they're probably my family watching it on facebook so oh well). And I very much identify with the OP's desire to make videos tight and clean. I want my vids to make sense even if they're not on YouTube. This is why I think the cards annotation feature is super exciting--I'll be able to overlay YouTube-specific links/messages without messing with my actual video.

A speaker at a workshop I went to said it is a good idea to "remind" people to subscribe as well as to let your viewers know when you post your videos. Some people don't think to subscribe otherwise.
