Do you think becoming popular on YouTube is still possible?

It is possible. But is would take a lot of dedication and passionate content towards that channel in question. But getting popular in my view is not a good reason to start a YT channel personally.

I don't aim to be famous, I'd rather be successful. There is a difference and I think a lot of people mix them up.

I'm just very average so I'll never get there in my life time.
Don't be so hard on yourself! Perseverance and vision go a long way to helping an 'average' person become extraordinary. Talent is learned, not innate, so learn how to be talented! :)

There is a fine line between being famous and being successful, absolutely right. Some of the most successful people in the world aren't well known because they're busy doing what they love. However YouTube is different, as success is defined (at least in popular culture) as how many subscribers and views you have. HOWEVER, having said that, personal success goals are more important.

For example, I want to film a short 2 minute story using only music and 1 actor (myself). It's something I've not done before, so I want to learn the process of scripting it, blocking it, filming, editing, and releasing something truly 'creative'. do I want it to get views? Damn right, but I think that's a part of anybody's psyche or ego. The true success is completing that project because I think it will be pretty cool.

Personally, I feel like its a lot harder to get anywhere on YouTube these days. But some people just do manage to get lucky. I remember seeing Markiplier maybe a year or 2 ago at like, low subs, maybe only about 10k (low for big youtuber standards) now look at him, hes become an icon
Yeah he's grown a ton! he got very lucky though, got tons of shoutouts and recommendations, alright for some :(

It's possible if you do it the right way meaning not buying subs or anything like that, daily/consistent uploads so an acceptable level and constantly looking for collabs. Collaborations are the best way to grow on YouTube nowadays so carry on and good luck to you :)

Yes, absolutely I do. I personally know people who started within the last couple months, who are gonna be hitting 100,000 within half a year.

That is insanely fast. I need to rub elbows with your people! lol, but seriously, that is pretty quick. They must have really good channels.

I think it is completely possible, I can only speak about gaming channels though since I have no experience with other genres. You have to understand how YouTube and SEO works and what you think would be a viral video or what would get more exposure.

For example in gaming as soon as a game comes out thousands of people make walkthrough videos and label them with parts (ie part 1, part 2). If you change that up a bit, including the title of the mission, you will get more exposure. Additionally, if instead of doing a walkthrough, choose specific parts of a game that is hard (ie Boss Fights, puzzles, challenges) you will also target a more specific niche.

This happened to me, even though I can release videos before release dates they don't get that many views. While my videos that were more targeted (How to pass a specific part) got a lot more views.

If you aren't interested in doing walkthroughs that help people out, you could also extremely edit videos and make them funny. Two examples of recent successes on this forum with edited gaming videos are UberDanger and BlastphamousHD.

its hard to get subscribers up but a lot of youtubers have gotten popular by spamming the s**t out of channels.. ive been on youtube a few years and im almost at 4000

Thanks for the tip. I'm a walkthrough guy myself, and I've noticed that the views are coming incredibly slow with my latest game. I've been looking for ways to change up the formula of my videos and I think that you gave me a good idea inadvertently. I still want to do my walkthroughs of course because I have a great time recording them but it's not ALL I want to do. I've tried more targeted videos in the past and had some slight success with them. I just never put two and two together on it for some reason. (I'm still new, only been doing this about 8-9 months)
