I feel like it’s a little bit of both! When you’re small it’s a little harder to gain subscribers if no one has never heard of you before, but if you use the right seo you will gain traction and the subscribers you gain will most likely share your videos with their friends and your new subscribers will probably do the same.
 
Up to a point your channel should snowball, so you should gradually see an increase in daily subscribers. There are so many variables though, nothing is guaranteed. You may just hit on a video that goes viral and be catapulted to thousands of subs in a matter of days or you may continue to grow at the same rate for years. There is no magic number that you can say "after 500 subs I started to grow more quickly" or "once I published my 50th video my channel exploded".

Since you have little to no control over many of the factors that will influence the growth of your channel it is best to focus on the things that you DO have control over; consistent, high quality content that engages your viewers.

Great advice.
It also helps to be passionate about your niche so that growth won't be the only focus, because if it is, things can get discouraging pretty quickly.
 
No simple answer. But make long videos and keep putting them out. Eventually some will take off and things will increase. I was at just 200 views a day a long way back and am closing in on 1000. It only goes up
 
No silver bullet to this question - I'm over 2,500 subs now and uploading daily helps me personally, but I don't feel a large "snowball" effect personally. Your "snowball" will depend on your content + what your expectations of a "snowball" size is (10...1,000...2,000 a day?).

My best advice is to upload the best content you can, as often as you can...the more great content that's out there, the more people can stumble across your videos and naturally things should go up over time. Hope that helps!!!
 
When your videos start to get hundreds of thousands or million views than you will get thousands of subs per day.
 
I am a really really small Youtuber. It took five months for my channel to achieve ten subs but then I started to put more effort in my videos and in two weeks I am almost doubling the number
 
I noticed this as well. It makes sense because the more people watch your videos, the more likely you're going to be shown in searches, which means even MORE people will watch. It's kind of a numbers game but an amount out of those watching will subscribe, and I think that's more or less when the snowballing will occur.
 
iv seen a compounding affect on my growth as well. no where near 1000 per day but starting out I might gain a sub or two per week then you start gaining 1 or two per day then several per day ect. I would not be surprised to see that trend continue even as the numbers get bigger and bigger.
