Posting Mad!
Hey guys, I know a lot of you (myself included) have posted about what's best for a smaller channel in regards to upload schedule...daily uploads, 2-3x a week, a few times a month, etc?
I wanted to test this out by doing an experiment on my own channel by changing up our upload schedule from 2-3x per week to a daily upload schedule for every day in February.
THOUGHT PROCESS
My mentality was always "2-3x a week is fine as we grow, and eventually do daily uploads once we have a bigger following." My thought with this was that if you do daily uploads too soon (like a daily vlog) you may oversaturate your audience with content, not allowing them to catch up, stress yourself out to create/produce/upload content and only see around 30 views on each video.
I'm always looking to better my channel and the main reason I decided to try this experiment was to create a consistent upload schedule and promote an atmosphere to our subscribers that will have them checking back frequently to our channel.
PLANNING
We launched this experiment on Jan 29 with a "Huge Announcement" video, explaining the new upload schedule, asking for subscribers input, setting goals for ourselves and our subs, and telling them about the types of videos we will feature and so forth. I made sure to hit several key points here making sure to include a "series" (Fort Fridays) that will further entice people to come back for more.
I also wanted to make a point in my videos to do more than say "subscribe/thanks for watching" ... people are almost immune to that now. So I actively plan out my comments about engagement and work to say things in each video about "comment below if..." and things like that. Not the best at that still, but trying to practice it until it's more natural like the rest of our content.
I also made a short clip of how to turn on alert notifications. I shout this out and show the clip (5 seconds or something) that will show people how to click that little bell and make sure it's on so they don't miss any uploads.
I sat down with Emily and we made a long list of video ideas and planned around our schedule of what day to film them and when to edit/upload them. For example, we planned ahead for the Super Bowl and made two videos about that, one of me as Tom Brady messing with people in public and one about Super Bowl commercials. We are planning out our content 1-2 weeks out and leaving the rest of the month open to fill in any of the ideas we have on our master list. Doing this in order to allow spontaneity and not robotic uploads.
RESULTS (THUSFAR)
So far into the experiment our subscribers have responded extremely well. They are commenting and viewing our videos very quickly, each video has 100-400 views at the moment.
We started this experiment with 406 subscribers. As of when I'm writing this (Feb. 6) we are sitting at 453 subscribers. It may sound crazy to some of you but I set a big goal for the month to hit 1,000 subscribers by March 1. (I have a lot of reasoning behind this that I won't get into here/yet, but simply put I think it's better to stretch yourself and think big than think short term)
Also...I've been trying to get into utilizing social media more. Long story short, I never used Twitter much bc I wanted to "minimize" my social media usage and was only using Facebook and barely Instagram for personal stuff.
Since we've started a YouTube channel (Late Nov. 2016) I've obviously done a 180 on this and gone full throttle. I'm a little behind on building a following on Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat. I literally started in November with 16 FOLLOWERS on Twitter, and three days ago it was 55 followers, and as of right now it is up to 219 FOLLOWERS!
My advice with social media: use it, leverage it, be consistent, and be proactive. I'll do a social media thread another time if you guys want.
NEXT STEPS
Like I said I am constantly thinking about "how can i make this better?" I'm sure most of you are the same way. For our channel I know I need to do a better job of linking our social media accounts IN our videos. I think the best way to grow is to engage with your audience. I'm planning on adding our twitter/snapchat/instagram links at the end credits/end card of our videos.
Also, I am considering using a "promote" option to boost the number of views we get for some of our videos. Not sure yet, this may mess up my experiment.
Finally I am looking for more ways to promote our channel. When we film our videos in public, or whenever we're out in public I hand out or put out business cards with our channel on them. I've had a great response from this! Here's what they look like:
I will update this thread with more results and how things are going as the month continues!
