Clip-on Microphone?

A clip-on mic isn't going to make your sound that much better then.

Of course it is!! All on board camera mics are generally terrible.

To the OP........
I also use a 650D and I attach an Audio Technica ATR 3350 - comes out pretty damn god for what I need - feel free to check my videos to get a sense of quality etc.[DOUBLEPOST=1373624306,1373624201][/DOUBLEPOST]
That is a whole different story than just plugging a lav mic into the camera, which I why I asked what he records on.

A Rode Videomic Pro probably does a good job with it, but I ain't touching lav mics with a dslr again anytime soon. That white noise is killing you...

*cringe*

I tend to get rid of the white noise (well most of it!) via my editor anyways

Removing white noise in post means something went TERRIBLY wrong in production. You'll cause artifacts in your audio. Best to eliminate the noise from the beginning.

Actually works pretty well for me - the option to remove background noise in FCPX. Im pretty happy with the results.

I'll use it on occasion too, but this should be done as a last resort sort of thing. There is no mechanism for noise removal that won't in some way affect the regular audio. It's best to invest as much time on the front end of things as possible to make sure you're recording right, and not have to tweak in post (this goes for both audio and video).
