Changing the way I make videos

Something quick about me.
Small Channel
Make 10-20 min long videos
Get some views, audience retention is very low.

We can all see the problem here already. I am making the videos too long its bad because no one knows who I am yet and don't know if my personalities is worth to watch. My plan was to shorten the video to maybe 2-5 minutes and only show the parts that is either funny/jump scares/interesting/tips/tricks. The only problem I keep thinking about is that I won't be able to keep the story in the videos.

Pros and Cons of both.
Short Video
Pros-
Short enough to keep them interested
2-5 minutes to entertain them and let them know my personalities.

Cons-
Hard to understand the story lines
Seems like it would be less enjoyable and quicker way to see spoilers.

Long Video
Pros-
See every minute and enjoy the story

Cons-
Since I am small no one knows who I am and how I act they would lose interest real quick.

Ex: Let's say I play The Last of Us. I keep the funny moments in the video and keep it in the 2-5 minute mark, but that would mean I cut out the cut scenes that tells the story. But, if I keep the cut scenes in then it would just be a clip of funny momments + cut scenes and that would make the video too long, since some cut scenes could last for 2+ minutes, and it would seem very boring and dull.

I could make 2 of each video like Funny moments and cut scenes, but I am afraid that it would be miss leading them to think its another funny video, but it was just cut scenes only.

I thought about doing this awhile back, but I keep putting myself in their shoe. I see the funny moments and enjoy it..but what if I want to treat it as s a movie and watch the whole game play. My feelings about this is like a pendulum right now haah.

So I was wondering what I should do. Stick with the long video that stay with the story or change it to a short video and keep the interesting parts.

Woah..long post. Sorry

you gotta switch to the short videos man. People on youtube... and in the world in general have a very short attention span. The moment they feel a second of boredom they will click away to something else that can entertain them. People on youtube dont care about seeing a story, most people that go to movies dont even care about the story... Look at the transformers movies. People just want to see explosions, quick camera changes, comedy...entertainment. Honestly if I see a video is 28 minutes long, I wont even click on it. You can even see it with the results you've gotten from your own channel, your highest viewed video is the horror montage.

Anyways, hope this helped. Best of luck :)

BUT THE STORIES ARE THE BEST PART! Yeah I understand, I'll change it from now on. When I started out I thought it was important to keep the important part because of the story, but I guess not after uploading 200 videos haha. It's going to be a weird transition after doing it for so long.

So the part that I should keep is entertainments/trick/tips, right? And for the editing, do you think I should add a bunch of special effects on certain part of the videos if it fits the mood? If so where can I learn how to add those special effects?

what do you mean by "special effects"?

Something like Uberdanger. The way he add the effects onto his video seems good. Also, should I just put my other videos as Private then since all my videos are over 10min. It's like starting over

Make a trailer with some clips of your longer gameplay or interesting content from the longer gameplay spliced into a short video.. to give a mini overview but yes.. start with short content.

I noticed that you uploaded 10 videos in one week, which is fine, but your subscribers are likely not going to watch every single one if they are uploaded in such a rapid succession. I would think about spreading out your videos and uploading like 3 videos a week or so, this would boost subscriber views and potential viewers would see that you are consistent in your upload schedule.

I struggle with this a lot. I like to tell self-contained overarching stories in every video. This makes some of my videos way too long, but I refuse to give in and start making 2 min long spazzy jumpcut videos. I like telling stories, I just hope I can find an audience that will appreciate it eventually...

But I realized from reading the thread you're talking about the story in the game? No one cares, man. There are PLENTY of other Youtubers that do No Commentary so if people wanted to watch a full playthrough, there are thousands and thousands of people doing that already.

You HAVE to differentiate yourself if you're making a gaming channel. You have to make YOU stand out, not the story of the game. No one gives a s**t if they can just watch the cutscenes elsewhere.

Yeah, I'm going to stop doing that now ahha. I'll probably set up a mwf schedule instead. Give time to record for an hr or so and spend the next day editing the rest out and uploading it all.
