I Love YTtalk
Can someone tell me exactly why this seems to be the consensus?
What it comes to I think is a way for smaller channels to make excuses for not being bigger as if saying that there are bigger channels out there that are more successful, but they aren't having as much fun with it. Having fun and "making it big" and getting "fans" are not mutually exclusive. Your quote above isn't the consensus from my experiences though.
The general consensus that I have heard is if that if you are doing YouTube for the money you are doing it for the wrong reasons, but I would hope that most people who YouTube want to get "fans" and "make it big". Whether someone is an entertainer, promoting a product or business, doing an instructional video or something in between, I imagine that they want their message to reach as many viewers as possible.
As for people warning about others not doing YouTube for the money, that is understandable. Most YTers aren't going to make a significant amount from their channels. Some people who have never done YouTube think that they can drop a grand on equipment and start a channel and expect to make that money back because it is just that easy. Some do, most won't. Then there are others who don't have any passion in what they do and just "do it for the money" and while some are good actors and get away with it, it sometimes shows with others. There is nothing wrong with having a goal to make money from YouTube, but most people shouldn't count on it
