I've tried a number of editors, but I reluctantly keep going back to Premiere Pro. It seems to do what I want to do with the minimal amount of frustration (though its transitions are all outdated and it basically has zero cool effects for text). I used Vegas for a number of videos, but it's a real pain for moving/panning still images. And every time I dropped a still image on the timeline, it would always resize it to fit the screen rather than keep it at the original size. I could resize the image, but Vegas had no easy way of showing how large my image actually was (150%, 125%, etc). What a PITA.
Anyway, the reason I put up with Vegas for so long was because the timeline interface was great. It's nice and fast, and you can overlap clips on top of each other without destroying either clip. It would just automatically do a cross-fade between the two. And you could always move the clip somewhere else if you didn't want it there. Premiere's timeline seems a bit outdated and sluggish in comparison.
If Vegas gave their still image interface an overhaul, then I would definitely consider going back.
I tried PowerDirector again recently. I really wanted to like this one, but it had awkward support for adjusting audio volume (like easily lowering parts of music to compensate for voiceover). Even the latest version (11) doesn't show your audio in decibels so it just makes it really awkward.
