Are tags becoming irrelevant? New info from YouTube.

I experimented with foreign tags. For traffic sources/YouTube search, no foreign search terms are in the top 25.

I guess it would also be influenced by interest within that country too -- for military themed tags I think Russian tags might be a good suggestion, whereas there may not be as much interest in Spanish/French audiences.

I read somewhere that prank/fail videos gain a lot of international traffic as they can be universally enjoyed but language barriers limit subscriptions to these channels for their other content. Overall it may not help, i don't think it would match most of my planned content.

When you search your terms Jesus Green are you doing in in a standard browser or an incognito/private browser.

Yep the closed captions. Well I think you can just as easily achieve the same by writing a long description, but if you can do both that's even more text that YouTube have to decide what terms to show your video for.

I do wonder if there are any specific terms as to what captions are allowed to contain - I know blatantly trying to fill them with new tags and stuff would obviously be against the terms, but what if you did have a silent video and added an optional CC commentary - kinda like when you get the director's commentary or something on a DVD? If the latter was allowed that'd be a nice way to make it easier to find some of the quieter videos - plus it'd also make for some cool ideas, I'd love it if like I was watching someone's home made film and one of their CC track options was a "Behind the scenes" where they explain each shot.

Excellent idea! I never thought about a 'behind the scenes' or 'directors' commentary. That actually makes a lot of sense when we are opening lots of surprise and kinder eggs with different toys -- each one of those is a keyword/tag in themselves.

Yeah I have started narrating the videos through CC again. While it might come in handy for the occasional deaf person, there isn't much talking in my vids. So describing what happened works. In a few instances it wasn't clear what the final outcome of the videos was so I just made up some funny lines and some of my viewers commented how much more entertaining it made the video for them.

I also think it may help keep people engaged... you know what it's like you start reading a subtitle and go into a bit of a hypnotic trance reading/watching. Don't believe me... go watch a video with subtitles or get someone in your family to and see how long it keeps them watching ;)
