Am I doing something wrong?

Hey guys and girls!

I own a gaming channel where I upload a variety of popular games. I'm currently sitting around 97 subscribers but I don't feel proud of them or about how I'm close to 100. Basically, I did sub 4 sub when I started my channel for hours each day for about 20 days-ish. This got me 97 subscribers, but obviously I don't feel that I've earnt them through them enjoying my content and actually just because they obviously just want me to subscribe. So, now I've uploaded around 7 videos and am back into daily uploading of gaming videos, these videos got around 10-20 views which is understandable because I took a massive break beforehand due to me getting teased a bit about doing sub 4 sub, and I guess they were right. So, now I'm kind of starting from the bottom all over again, and I just want to know when I should be able to start to notice growth viewers/subscribers wise? I'm choosing very popular games at the moment that have a HUGE fanbase out there in hope of attracting an audience faster than a dying, unpopular game.

Don't get me wrong, I love making videos, it's awesome! But, I just feel like no-one gets to see them and it's just kind of a downer because I spend a good few hours every single day out of my own freetime to edit and record/render etc. May not sound like much, but combined with high school, homework and exams it makes it tougher to fit in. So, I just want a bit of advice as to how long it should take for me to notice growth and if I should be doing something that I'm not. As of now, I'm not advertising anywhere because I just want to know how much growth YouTube on its own will get me. If I need to be advertising, then what would a good social media be to use in order to do so?

Thank you for reading this, I've just realised this is a kinda long post, but these are just all of the questions which have been running through my mind.
PS: As of yet, I've not noticed any growth in terms of subscribers or watch time which is still around 1-2 minutes...

I'm sorry I can't offer any specific advice about your channel because I know nothing about gaming. I did just want to encourage you to just keep keeping on. (As a mom of a high school student I have to add - school comes first, lol). Everyone says that it's a long haul with lots of times when nothing happens. Please don't get discouraged. Make the videos you like and keep trying to improve. Recognizing your own growth and improvement, even if the numbers don't always match up, will hopefully be its own reward.

Hey man I know how you feel. I am currently at Uni working my a** off both youtube and work and It really gets to you. I hate to say this but this is why people dont tell you to sub4sub. all it does is give you subscribers that wont watch your videos because they care about numbers. Its not too late though.

For a small channel you got to advertise in the right area's. I used to think that my videos were unique enough that I wouldnt need to advertise. I changed my mind pretty quickly because I was getting no subscribers and only about 5 views a day. go on your social media and just say "hey I made a video check it out" so your friends and people support you can check it out. you can even advertise on forums like this and reddit, make people around you know you do videos.

My advice is make your channel reborn. Know what type of content you are going to create make sure you know what kind of people you want to attract to your channel and just work from there. I may only have 47 subs but I did work hard for those because I know they are all individuals who came to my channel to support me and the work I do. One day through hard work and dedication on your channel you can have a small fanbase that WILL watch your videos and support you. Its all about patience

Good luck on your channel

Well I am glad that you realized that sub 4 sub isn't the way to go, so good job. Honestly my advise to you is to keep working hard, and always be willing to change up what your doing. Maybe use the channel review section in the forums here? Then you can hear feedback from people and make adjustments accordingly. First thing I noticed is that you need to organize your home page where it has like a featured video and then have your different play lists underneath it. Just check out bigger channels and see how their channel home page looks and youll know what I mean. Sometimes playing whats popular you get lost in the mass amounts of videos of the same exact thing. Try and think of video ideas that are outside of the box a little? Also MAKE PLAYLISTS! When people subscribe they want to be easily able to go back to your old content, and sometimes people like to binge watch people they sub to. If you don't have playlists that makes it harder to do that and people probably wont watch as many of your old videos. Your thumbnail on your most recent video is great, and your videos that from like 5 months ago have great thumbnails. The videos between that could use some better thumbnails. Don't be afraid to make some nice ones for those, that could get more views on those videos. Anyways keep working hard my friend :)

Share share share, reddit, facebook etc. Sub4sub will only get you empty numbers, gaming seems like a pretty saturated market on YT but there's also a lot of demand. Nowadays I usually make a video, then share it / advertise it then when I'm happy with the views make another, but each to their own of course.

You need to look at your tags. I watched your most recent video and the tags were: I think they must be autopopulating when you upload.
  • video
  • sharing
  • camera phone
  • video phone
  • free
  • upload

Y'know what, dude? Respect.

Respect for acknowledging that sub4sub is a bad move and learning to grow from your mistakes. Believe me, more of us have been there than you'd think!

It's a tricky question to answer because growth is entirely dependant on like a million factors - even things like the time of year can come into it. Gaming is a popular market, yeah, but it's become so saturated that you really need to do something spectacular in order to stand out these days.
You could be the first to upload gameplay of the latest game or be shared by one person with a million friends - but there's honestly no way of seeing when it'll actually happen.

The best (and annoyingly, most vague) answer that I can possibly give is - keep going.
You keep posting, they'll keep seeing, you'll keep growing, they'll keep watching, you'll keep going.

I'll give you a little kickstart and check out some of your stuff now. You can do it, man!

I imagine a big problem with gaming is that so many people do it.
You say you do the big name games, so do many others.

Perhaps look at other peoples game vids from the top youtubers. Is ther a difference in thier production or delivery. Is it more entertaining than yours?

When you are in a big segment competing against so many similar channels you either need a hell of alot of luck - or to stand out with your delivery.

What do you mean by autopopulating? I upload gaming content so every video I always fill the tags box with relevant searches etc for my video so that I can get it to show up in just about any relevant search, if I look hard enough that is because it'll always be at the bottom... :D

Thank you for this, I will definitely be acting upon this today since I'm away from school due to an infection, so I literally have the entire day free. The thumbnails on a few recent videos have just been the automatically selected ones by YouTube, I mainly did that because I got back from a holiday up north and then I got a new PC so I didn't have all of my editing software installed. I'll go back and redo those. Also, by playlists do you mean like I should make separate playlists for each series that I'm running since I have multiple at the moment?

Y'know what, dude? Respect.

Thank you very much for this kind post :D I am going to keep going but I'm just so worried that the channel literally will not grow because I try my best to advertise to my friends, family and others but it doesn't seem to attract too many people. I'm actually okay with the views I get but the problem I have is that the subscriber count never goes up, at the end of the video I always ask the viewer to, 'Like, comment and subscribe!' But none of them ever do. ;) I will keep going though and hopefully I'll reach a point after quite a few videos where my views would have grown more resulting in more subscribers.

ahh don't worry it happens to everyone,

It does get depressing (I'm on 666 devil sign on subs!)

But we cant control views, we can only control the quality of videos..might I suggest cutting down the number of videos to 3? Too many up coming youtubers do daily videos and expect to pop off.. Sometimes less is more, if your making good quality videos (which I know you are) how about letting them breathe on youtube for a few days?..Let the view count grow on them - think about it more people would want to click on a video that has more views as they think "whats this video all about?"

keep ur head up message me if you ever want to talk as the gaming realm is the hardest to crack. :D
