$8 a Month for Ad Free Youtube

I honestly feel like this will go in the same direction as Twitch has been going with their subscription system. It will work, IF they add more features than just "ad-free". Maybe something like a private social feed or access to scheduled uploads.

It will work, if the benefits balance with the cost.

Since adblock is easily available, I don't think anyone will use this.

SHHH maybe teenagers will suddenly forget adblock exists or adblock will corrupt their computers and they will have to pay![DOUBLEPOST=1428525860,1428525687][/DOUBLEPOST]
I have a feeling YouTube/google can block the adblockers anytime they want. I've thought that for a long time. I might be wrong but it's a feeling I had. Some will pay, some won't. We'll just have to see how everything shakes out.
There is code to block the adblockers

ya know I hadnt thought about that...thanks[DOUBLEPOST=1428533242,1428532859][/DOUBLEPOST]
I'm gonna be honest. The fact that anyone on this forum uses AdBlock infuriates me.

This is a site about promoting and helping to support YouTubers, and here you are advocating software that robs them of income. It's a sad state of affairs when watching an ad for a few seconds, which actually helps these people make a living doing the very thing you're watching them do, is so difficult that you have to install software to block it. You might as well ask why you'd bother buying albums and movies when BitTorrent is free?

I have few "rules" in my life, but a big one is "what would happen if everyone did what I'm doing?" In this case, what would happen if everyone went "oh I'll just install Adblock"? The answer: either the concept of a "professional YouTuber" would vanish and ALL content would revert to being lower-quality done by people who still have to work another full time job, OR YouTube would simply remove ads in favor of a paywall ENTIRELY.

Ads KEEP YOUTUBE ALIVE. They're not spam, they're not there to intrude upon your life. Without them, there is no YouTube, and with that everyone's dream of doing YouTube full time evaporates.

Good job.

well if you could tell us how to turn it off for just one site...my son loaded it for me so my banking stuff would work...my bank doesnt allow ads or cookies or other stuff and it wont show if you dont have them blocked...so I blocked them. BUT I dont know how to turn it off for other sites. So a bit of help there would be appreciated.

Today, I was requested to accept new terms. Somebody else posted a copy of those same terms here:

Since we have to opt-in for revenue sharing of the subscription fees, that means that channels that do not monetize or do not opt in will not be receiving any shares of such revenue.

I just read the new terms and was thinking of this post.. =)

The part I really don't like is this:
"YouTube ...... may determine the type and format of ads available on the YouTube Service."

I think that was always there in some form, but the way it was worded caught my attention this time.. =/ I think that's another way of saying that YouTube reserves the right to make things really unbearable and annoying for those who don't pay...

I wonder what they mean by their subscription revenue part:

"Subscription Revenues. YouTube will pay you 55% of the total net revenues recognized by YouTube from subscription fees that are attributable to the monthly views or watchtime of your Content as a percentage of the monthly views or watchtime of all or a subset of participating content in the relevant subscription offering (as determined by YouTube)"

Does that mean everyone's watchtime or views (what do they mean by "or?" Those are two different things..) are in a pool and the 8 dollars per subscriber is divided up amongst everyone based off of their paid-subscriber statistics after YouTube takes their 45%? Can a paying subscriber get in trouble for watching their own videos? I think gaming channels will get the most if it's by watchtime, and people will start to make lightning-short videos if its by views... I guess we'll just have to see how this pans out. It could be good, but it could end up not so good.. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works out in everyone's favor since Google has so far been pretty smart...

I assume this will remove ad-promoted videos for a chunk of super-dedicated YouTube viewers. Will that feature go away eventually? I guess there still will be lots of people who will still see other YouTuber's ads, but less than the current numbers.. I wonder what other promotion tools will pop up?

Why would it get rid of Ad promoted videos?

I meant that if people pay for ad-free YouTube, then wouldn't YouTube videos that are being promoted through their Ad system no longer be viewed in their promoted ad format by the paid subscribers? I'd think that new YouTube channels that rely on the ads for their channel promotion would be pushed towards an audience that doesn't pay for subscriptions (and a slightly narrower, less-dedicated YouTube audience).. But I'm just speculating.. ^^

Has YouTube confirmed what ads are going away? Maybe the ones that pop up next to a video on the side or a banner will still exist but not the one's in the videos.

I'm not sure if there are going to be some YouTube ads kept and others removed, but I'm under the assumption that all forms of ads will be removed for those who pay.. They sent out an email that mentions it's going to be an "ads-free version of YouTube," although I haven't heard any more specific details..

I'll just post what they sent for those who did not get the email:

"Your fans want choices. Not only do they want to watch what they want, whenever they want, anywhere, and on any device they choose, they want YouTube features built specifically with their needs in mind. Over the past several months, we’ve taken bold new steps to bring these experiences to life. Since inviting hundreds of thousands of fans into our YouTube Music Key Beta, we've seen tremendous engagement. And we've seen an equally enthusiastic response for our new YouTube Kids app, designed to give families a simpler and safer video-viewing experience— it’s already crossed 2 million installations in less than one month.

We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue.

So what’s next?

Launching a new paid offering will require us to update your terms through your Creator Studio Dashboard—a process that should feel familiar to anyone who went through a similar process three years ago when we began distributing and monetizing your content on mobile devices. Today, mobile represents over half of all watchtime and mobile revenue is up 200% in the last year. Just as with mobile, we’re confident this latest contract update will excite your fans and generate a previously untapped, additional source of revenue for you. Please look out for our notification, review it and let us know your thoughts.

It’s an exciting year for YouTube, as we push ourselves into uncharted territories. But we continue to be guided by a desire to deliver the choices fans want and the revenue you need. By working closely with you, we know it’ll be a successful journey.

The YouTube Team"

The direction they are taking seems interesting...I'm not sure what I think about it quite yet!

Maybe Promoted Ads are different. Plus you have options when you make them. You can have Video, or Banners or Promoted videos on the side of other videos. The last two doesn't interfere with the video. Or they could go at the end of a video.

I like the YouTuber's ads.. I've found some neat youtubers through them! =( Hopefully they don't go away completely..I'm sure Google has thought about this, although the whole thing seems a bit geared towards larger channels. That makes sense since larger channels have an audience that YouTube can potentially make a pretty large bit of money from... It just sorta stinks for newbies though.. Argh...Why didn't I start this channel a few years ago? : P
