2,000 Channels in the Millions!!

I've Got It
So I read an article the other day that got me thinking. It talked about how over this past weekend, April 1-4 of 2016, there are officially 2,000 YouTube that have at least 1 million subscribers.

Here's the analytics:
  • February 23, 2010 - only 5 channels with at least 1 million
  • 2012 - 68 channels
  • 2014 - 594
  • Today - 2,000
So it got me thinking - is it even a real achievement anymore to hit that milestone? So many people are doing it nowadays that it's not even hard to find a large channel in the millions. In my opinion, I think the real glory is now getting to that 10 million mark.

I'm not saying that it's any easier now to get there or that it shouldn't be something to be proud of as an individual - because honestly I would go insane and probably cry if I ever hit a million - but that it's just not rare anymore. And what do those numbers mean for later years? The numbers have more than doubled each year. Hundreds of more people will get that golden play button within the next few months and within the coming years it'll double.

I don't even know what my point is, I just wanted to rant about this. It just kind of takes away the magic of what being a big YouTuber means, and it saddens me.

But what do you guys think of these numbers? Is it still a big deal or has it become too common?

P.S. When is PewDiePie gonna quit YouTube? I actually like him so this isn't a hate comment, I'm just curious what his plans are if/when he moves on from YouTube and what that would mean for YouTube and everyone doing YouTube.

For me as well, it's still a MASSIVE achievement but the numbers are definitely becoming more common though. With the amount of YouTubers hitting that one million mark, the amount of YouTube channels that are also started up each day with the hopes to make it big are increasing multiple times compared to those. I also imagine there would be millions upon millions of channels out there but with only 2000 have hit that 1 million subscriber mark is still a super small proportion.

Getting to that milestone is still quite an accomplishment in my eyes and requires a lot dedication and I super respect that.

In regards to Pewdiepie, I don't watch him often but I hope he never quits unless that's what he really wants, he has worked so hard for what he deserves and is constantly ever expanding, it's pretty damn awesome/inspiring :). He is a bosssss

2000 people over the millions that do youtube is still an elite class.

PewDiePie will probably quit when his popularity is gone and it cannot become a profit for him.

It's a job now, I bet he does love it but still, it's his income and the minute his income diminishes is the minute he won't make as many videos.

It's still an achievement but everything is scaled with more people on the platform. 1 million is as commonplace as the old 100k mark, so the perks available to those who have hit the milestone have been scaled down accordingly.

It's definitely still a milestone! I guess I'm just worried that eventually that 2,000 is going to turn into 100,000 and so on. Because at that point it's just not even amazing, everyone is doing it. And I know that about 87% of the YouTube channels are mostly inactive or don't upload videos at all. I just don't really know how to feel about it. :confusedphones:

Also! PewDiePie just released his final Scare PewDiePie video so that's officially over. Wonder what he's gonna do next? You think there's ever gonna be a movie with him?

I think eventually, either YouTube will evolve in some way or there will be another platform that allows people to share in a way that we haven't considered before, and that's where the milestones will start to rack up again. I think YouTube is doing very well, and probably has a number of years left in it, but it's getting more and more like traditional media (or at least trying to), so the next thing that hits will have to come out of left field, and then the numbers of subscribers will not matter quite as much, because the platform will be outdated.

Hopefully not very soon, but the one thing you can count on w/r/t the internet is constant change.

That's exactly what I was thinking. YouTube is becoming very mainstream now and everyone wants to hop on the bandwagon (not that I'm one to talk :P). I think there will differently be a newer form of creativity that people can join in on and I'm really curious to see what that is. Maybe it'll be RevelMode? Still not too sure what that exactly is.

Well, to put it this way, over 4,000 people have summited Mt Everest. And I'd still be a little more than pleased with myself if I made it to the top of the world haha. I get what you mean though. I think it's cool though that more and more people are reaching this goal. It just means that YouTube is still growing.

Haha oh I would be sooooo happy if I reached a million, I don't care if thousands of other people have already done it.
