Why do you take SEO advice???

my entire strategy since the beginning has been SEO and maximizing metrics such as watch time and audience retention.

250 vids. 60 million views. A couple viral videos. 7 or 8 vids with over a million views.
I'm doing OK. not the best. But I am happy to help people who want to be helped.

Congrats on your success hun but it's not because of SEO -___-

How many people are searching monthly for things like:

Shooting An AR-15 Filled MARSHMALLOW CANDY

You're ranking 6th for "shooting an AR-15" but that has very little searches monthly. If you were ranking for a AR-15 keyword that is highly searched and ranking at the top??? Then I'd say here is another SEO master, but that's not the case.

Where is a majority of your traffic coming from? It's not YouTube search

My suggestion for you is to do keyword research and work on ranking #1 for the things you desire or at least top 5 for keywords that generate massive traffic.

Although whatever form of marketing / advertising you are currently doing is making your channel successful, with the right keywords you can easily triple your numbers. ^_^

what if your viewers didn't have to find you (search) and instead our videos found them? (home, recommended, trending, suggested for you)
I certainly spend 1% of my time on youtube searching for something, and 99% of the time video hopping through suggested and related videos, found some really cool youtubers that way :D
most kids probably hardly use search, unless they can be bothered to type in one or two words at most.

the only people that 100% need to have most of their audience from search is 'how to' channels. most entertainment channels rely more on suggested/home traffic

I don't do any marketing or advertising. My channel is dead now. Last year for a decent portion of the year I was getting 1k subs a day and over 100k views per day.

I've never ranked ar-15. Just ak47 and glock. and I used to dominate the first page for those and a few others. but not really anymore. this year I haven't put any effort into it.

All my views now come from Home, related and suggested. very few from subscribers or search. Last year was more from search. but of course it didn't compare to related and suggested.

Most of the SEO advice I've received works well... 90% of SEO is the bare essentials like tagging, description, keywords in title. The true test is going to come with the retention scores and watch time.

Most smaller channels (myself included) aren't taking bad advice. We just have low channel authority and accumulated watch time.

Let's just call this the WHY thread. I've been seeing things on this forum concerning SEO tips that have brought me to tears. People are giving advice, others are taking it and the advice is so far left, it can't be right.

Please answer these questions for me, it will help me help people in the future and get the correct wording for my help.

Why do you take SEO advice from people who aren't ranking in the search? Or, if they are ranking it's only for a few videos 0_o

This is something that baffles me and I would LOVE to understand.

Why do you get tips from people about SEO, apply them, they don't work, and then you continue to use them?

Are you hoping one day it will work?

Why do you share tips on SEO if you don't apply them or you do apply them and they aren't even working for you?

Why do you take SEO advice from BIG YouTubers who never utilized SEO?

Seriously, not trolling, I would just love to understand why when it comes to SEO people are willing to hit their head against a brick wall continuously in the hopes the brick will turn into a pillow.

I'm so confused, please help me.

PrettyKeli,

I have read through all of your replies and after reading it this all makes since to me now ! I am VERY new to Youtube and as I look at my analytics majority of my views come from myself promoting my own videos on my Instagram. I have followed many basic SEO tips from many different blogs ect. but have completely ignored my view duration and retention. As of now my average watch time is around 3 minutes for most of my videos one of my videos hit almost 5 mainly because it was questions about me and my girlfriend. I would love to learn more from you about all of this, are there any tips you have for me and my channel while I continue to grow. I will be working on making my videos much shorter to help rank higher, but if you have any channel critiques for a small Youtuber that would be great !

Thank you,
Kyle
