Dude, you are amazing! I just started my Youtube channel a couple of days ago and I can't wait to use all of the stuff you taught me to my advantage. If what you are saying is actually true, then I will be more than excited to see the results =D

This is all great info (and pretty much what I expected) for when I'm tagging videos. The thing I still dont quite know is how to make any satire/comedy skit videos pop up like this....

I have done more research than you could imagine, and I have gotten extremely good at SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for YouTube, so I thought I would make this guide. First, here are some examples of my videos ranking above huge channels and viral videos...

This video has under 400 views and ranks on page one of "How To Make A Game" Currently, I am working on getting this to the top spot, but it still is bringing me 20-60 views a day.

2) Tags - Don't be fooled. Tags matter a great deal, and if you do them right, you can have results like the ones above. Lets pretend you made a cover of a Beatles song. First you need to realize something. You will not rank for the search "cover", so why should that be in your tags? It should not. From my experience, the more tags you have, the less important each one is. You should use more long tail tags. If you want to rank for a specific keyword, that keyword should be the only focus of your tags. You don't want the search engine to go "well they seem to want to rank for both 'cover music' and 'Beatles Songs', so we should rank them poorly for both". You want the search engine to say, "wow everything here is relating to the search 'Beatles cover song', so we should rank this video at the top for this search'. Indecisiveness is a negative trait. It is also very important to decide how many tags you should have. It is very debatable, but the amount of tags you have should be dependent on the size of your title and the broadness of the searches you wish to rank for. For larger channels, you can rank for many different searches at one time and use lots of tags. For smaller channels however, you should focus primarily on one search and only the tags that would apply to it.

Also, there are many other factors. Subscribers and current views are very large factors. The age of the video can be a factor as well, but you cannot control these. Lastly, it will rank higher if you are a partner and the video has ads enabled. If ads are enabled, YouTube makes more money, so they want people to view it. If you read this far you are awesome! ;)

I completely disagree with #2 Tags.

Tags - It says right in the youtube creator handbook and many youtube seo search ranking tips videos that you should use up the entire 120 limit character for tags. Every single tag you put in there is extremely important! You should definitely mirror back every word in your title and put them in your tags. If you make a "cover" video that keyword better be in your tags! This helps the search ranking understand that it is a "cover" and will help it show up as a related video to other covers. Make sure to use some of the same words in singular and plural form : cat -cats. fly -flying, eat, eats, eating. Make sure to use words that are related or like your keyword. cat, cats, kittens, kitten, animal, animals, etc... Another example mean, mad, angry, upset, etc.. Make sure to throw as many describing words in - best, greatest, funny, funniest, etc.. Make sure to put common words - the, my, are, is, and, etc.. Some one could type in "why is my cat so mean" Somebody else could type in "Why are cats so angry" If you put in the correct keywords you will rank high in both searches! Make sure to put the words in tags and by them self - "how to" how (by it's self) to (by it's self). If you run out of ideas for key words to fill up the entire 120 character keywords box put in keywords to similar type of videos that you would like your video to show up as a related video increasing your video views!

SEARCH FOR YOUR VIDEO BEFORE YOU MAKE IT! Know exactly where you want your video to show up in the search rankings! Use other videos like your videos as a reference of what keywords you may want in your video. You may not alone think of some critical keywords that may be extremely important and this will at least help your chance of your video becoming a related video to a popular video like it!

I have ranked in the #1 search spot on a lot of great search keywords with 100,000+ views on my videos ranking above youtubers with over millions of subscribers! I think everything else in the op's post is on point and I want to say great post!

Thanks for your response! :) From my personal experiences and research, and I have found this area to be relatively inconsistent. For a larger channel trying to rank for an overall idea, yes you are correct. You want every single tag that relates what so ever. For smaller channels, it is often impossible to rank for things that are only semi-related. With that in mind, I tend to pick one or two search phrases to rank for instead of a whole area of videos. I have found that when doing this adding extraneous tags seems to lower the value of your primary tags. There is definitely a place for using the entire tag box, but oftentimes this seems to hurt results. I'm glad you agree with everything else. :)

Thanks for this guide, this is very useful, especially the bit about separatting words out in the tags, I had not thought to do that before but can see how it can work, cheers.

Thanks for the post! Do you know any good and FREE sites that will help determine the strength of the keyword other than keyword youtube tool?

I recently added a link on the post to a Google Chrome extension that will tell you some overall SEO ratings, but I don't think it is overly accurate on the ratings. It is more just really good to see what others are doing. I don't know of any tool that does tell you the strength of the keyword, because there is no formula for a good keyword. The best way to figure out if it is good is through trial and error sadly, but you can use the information from things like the Google Keyword Tool to enhance the success rate of that trial and error.
