Partnership questions...

what about older music or other artists? I credited the artist in my latest video and clearly stated i don't own any of the music or the rights to the music

That doesn't matter. I can't make a movie in Hollywood, use a copyrighted song and get away with it by saying it's not mine. You don't have the rights to use it, so you can't. Simple as that.

it matters who the artist is.. you have to have permission of most people saying you have the rights to use their music/content on your videos otherwise the second your videos try to monetize (or you claim the video) boom you'll get copyright strikes. which you may already have from posting videos with copyrighted music.. saying you don't own it means nothing! That's pretty much just admitting you're using the content/song without permission :L
Unless you have an online licence or some kind of permission I would stay clear of ANYTHING which is copyrighted.

EDIT: sometimes if you use less than like.. I think it's 10 seconds it can get pasted as "fair use" but you still won't be able to claim or monetize the video
So I can't claim my own videos as long as it has other artist music in it? What if I became a non profit partner?

1) The notion of "full partner" is obsolete, as all the differences will be wiped out after the layout change that's supposed to happen today. For all intents and purposes, if you have ads on your video, you're a partner. You could use adsense, or get accepted by a network.

Not all differences, there`s still shows and YouTube live
and then of course licenses : like if you make covers you may want to sign with Fullscreen as they have licenses with a few big labels or if you make gaming videos go with a gaming network e.g. Vultra ;)

Also the better networks prove their own features aswell as YouTube`s ones.

non-profit partner? that doesn't exist! Networks use your videos to put adverts on to make themselves money, they just give you a slice of the money because you make the videos :).. but no I wouldn't claim/monetize videos with copyright music in that you don't have permission to use because you will either get a copyright strike and not be able to get partnership until you have removed the video (and waited 6 months) or if you're partnered you're network will go mental! Because they might get sued.

But I really like mussssssic lol, so what if I just don't become a partner? Can I still use music by artists?

how can i get permission?
Simply put, you can't. Why would the publicity team of One Direction give a s**t about you, me, or any of us? Maybe if it was Smosh they'd be willing to listen, but they don't care about us, and would never license it out to us. Or if they did, they would charge a ton of money for it, making it not worth it. Just use music that's royalty free or in a lincensing contract with your network.

Yes, you can just never become a partner. However, they may start putting ads on your videos and making money off them from that. Plus there's the off chance that your video will get taken down from DMCA. I'd just not do it. You can, but most wouldn't recommend it.

but what if i dont use anyone nearly as popular or big as One Direction? I use music that's not exactly as noticeable or commonly played on radio or whatever.
