Don't you have to challenge a claim to get a strike?
Nope, but once you dispute the claim, they reject it, and you appeal it, a DMCA takedown is their only recourse left and that gives you a strike. But anyone can have your video removed and give you a strike at any time regardless of if there are any claims on it or not. They are separate systems.

Don't multiple strikes start their 6-month clock after the previous strikes expire?
Sorry I got here so late. If you get two simultaneous strikes, which it seems the OP did, this will count as two full strikes on the three-strike "countdown". Unfortunately, what most creators don't realize is that even if you get past the six month clock without another infraction, those initial strikes never expire "on the clock". The system is now primed, and another strike at any future point in the channel's history, will result in that finality of channel termination.

The only way around this, is a successful strike appeal or removal of strike by the claimant, which results in a "clock reset" as if the strike had never occurred.
