I need a new video editing tool, any ideas?

Did you compress them or save them in lower quality format? Are you sure the videos were put into the software in HQ or HD format?

HQ is 720p as opposed to HD which is 1080p. I'm not sure why your quality would drop unless maybe there was something in your settings for the project. I am not familiar with Camtasia, but generally with any editing software, you have the ability to create settings prior to editing. If you don't have the right settings, it can affect the final product when exported.

oh, ok, i always set the recorder to youtube hi-def settings, which should be 720. but sony vegas still makes the video look grainy.

you should try sony vegas if your pc can run it but if not then rendering may take quite a while using it
