Honest opinions about promotion

Hey! So I was a decent sized Twitch streamer and had to quit for personal reasons. So now I do youtube, obviously because I'm here :D. I don't necessarily want to get big but I would love to have a good amount of viewers who I can interact with. So my question is, how can I actually go about that? I've heard all of it basically. That's one of the reasons I found myself on here, because of a promotion advice video. But I'd really like to hear the real stuff. How did you guys actually get viewers and grow a community.

For me, it's been patience and really connecting with the folks who subscribe and comment on my videos, and back at their videos. Other types of promotion have been very helpful, of course, but I try to make sure I'm always interacting with anyone who bothers to comment, especially, and I've tried really hard to be helpful to other channels, promoting them on my social media and mentioning them in my own videos, etc.

But patience really helps. It takes a long time and not getting discouraged can do a lot more than people think. So many people give up after a very short amount of time, and that's a shame.

i know this isnt advice but just to add to your post and to the reply above .. just seeing my channel grow by a subscriber or 2 every now and then and seeing comments on videos that have ended up in conversation .. makes me feel so good about my channel iv had it 4 weeks.. i think facebook may help fir promotion .. i dont have a huge following on facebook cos i only use it to find out about car events and to talk to car contacts and i dont have any friends or family on there so my friends list is small .. but it always helps having a page and promoting it on there or other FB pages that may be interested in your content !

Probably post more often..work on thumbnails and audio. Audio is a bit weird, like it distorts then comes back. Try make it nice loud and clear. I'm still struggling with the perfect gain/distance from mic/and audio editing so it's all a process :) Also most of us here are all new like 200 subscribers and less (50 for me) so we are all still learning from each other. Not everyone knows everything and even someone with 0 subscribers may teach a thing or two.

I started off with really bad quality videos; crap headset/mic, HORRIBLE laptop (30 fps average on Minecraft ;-;), and terrible editing skills. Ever since i started Youtube i have been improving my quality, buying better equipment, and posting a somewhat regular basis. Now i post slightly funny highlights of games i record, and have been trying out more games and reaching out to other youtubers more and more, and my channel has grown the most this past 2 months or so because of all that. I dont know where i am going with this, but maybe you can get some ideas from my story :)[DOUBLEPOST=1469075994,1469075910][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, interacting with your viewers is a VERY GOOD way to increase viewer interest and keep them watching your content and feeling like they are contributing to your channel.

Since you were a decent size Twitch steamer you should try to use similar techniques to grow an audience. Of course its not going to be the same as doing youtube, but I imagine you could take a lot of good experience from when you were streaming to apply it to your channel.

The biggest difference between Twitch and Youtube is that with Twitch, you literally have an ad going everytime you stream. So all it really takes is just stream alot and interact so they stay. Youtube doesn't really self-advertise everytime you upload a video. So thats the part I'm struggling the most with. Also it's easier to make good impressions on people on Twitch than with people on Youtube because you can speak to them directly, I'm considering doing a kind of shoutout video every once and a while? Do you guys think that would be a good idea?

Learn about SEO. its more important than promotion and can provide you unlimited growth if you can get in the first 10 results of a youtube search. of course you can and should promote on facebook, twitter, reddit etc, but getting good at SEO should be one of your first goals

in my 8 months on youtube using good SEO i have only ever had 8 days where i didn't gain at least one sub

IMO shoutouts are never a good idea. It's just a quick way to get subscribers and views and makes your channel look really bad. Don't want to steer that way.
