Am i the only one not trying to join a network/partnership

I'm in the same boat. I don't plan to partner up at all until I get like 10 times my daily views.[DOUBLEPOST=1370386921,1370386769][/DOUBLEPOST]
I don't understand, people keep mentioning custom thumbnails. Please tell me, I really want to understand this.
You can use custom thumbnails if you enable monetization through youtube, correct?
Or is it if you become a youtube partner?
Do people join networks in addition to being a youtube partner or can you only partner with a network OR youtube?
When you monetize videos through youtube, you get paid. Can you monetize your videos through youtube AND another network?
What does partnering with youtube do for you versus partnering with a network? Are they compatible and how are they alike and different?

You can use custom thumbnails without partnering.

You partner with a network or youtube.

Monetized with a partner means they display their ads on your videos and you get paid through them.

That's the million dollar question, some people swear you get more benefits, but that's debatable. If you can negotiate a good contract you can very well make more money than via partnering directly with YouTube. It also opens up other things like corporate sponsorship and free tickets to vidcon etc...

Dude being in a contract is awesome! I love the stress of not worrying when Ill have to look for a new network, and I don't have to worry about other people offering me stuff It's fantastic!

Well I mean ya, how else can I have my "let the bodies hit the floor" song on my awesome COD without getting flagged? Oh I know what you are going to say "But what happens when your contract is over and you leave to another network? Won't that mean that now if your new network doesn't have the licensing to the song you used in that movie that went big, will get flagged for copyright?" Well Sir I say to that... Ill cross that bridge when I come to it! duh....

They give me branding! YA!!

Psh getting "promoted" is so over rated. Because when you got a network backing you up... You are without a doubt going to be famus!

Yes you do sir... Networks are the beezknees!

(Also... There may have been a little sarcasm here. and by a little I mean all of it)

So your network requires the individual licences to each song if I wanted to use that copyrighted material ? I guarantee no network will have the licences for the music I would want to use haha

You cannot use copyrighted audio and monetize it. You can use royalty-free music however.

Some networks have done deals with music labels to share monetization of songs. For example with Fullscreen you can monetize videos containing Universal Music Group songs, the revenue from which is then split (I think 50/50) between UMG and you/Fullscreen.

I guess this is beneficial from the labels stand point because the time they spend chasing round YT videos containing their songs is probably not worth it for the revenue those videos generate.

well most networks ether buy or just somehow have the licensing rights to music (not sure how really, I assume they buy it) then offer it to their channels as an incentive (and it works apparently ha ha), which is why it isn't considered copyright because they paid to use it and they are letting you use their licensing. But if you used one networks licensing on a song in your video that ended up going viral. and later on you decide to not use them any more and go with someone else or no network at all, the licensing for that video is now gone, and it will get flagged after a while and ether you will get a strike or you won't be able to monetize that video any longer due to the fact that the person who claimed the copyright is now getting the ad revenue. and in rare cases you will get your video taken down or your channel. So really you shouldn't use their licensing unless you plan to stay with them forever, which probably isn't a good idea ha ha.

I know that. They have media distribution licenses for cover songs to be monetized. But still if you used them in your video, and you don't own them rights, you will still face copyright. ;)

I don't plan to join any network, ever, hopefully. I feel like I can do everything myself. Getting legal permission to use in-game footage is easy. Getting free music and sounds is also easy. Network don't help you grow so I can do that on my own as well. I feel like networks don't help you AT ALL unless you join one for music (artists can be harder to get legal permission for). Secondly, I would only ever consider joining a network if I was very big and a network with a great ad sales team offered me partnership. I really don't see the benefits of networks.
