I think the fact you're concerned about it means you won't actually become one of those pains in the backside that spam their stuff everywhere. I see a lot of it in my circles and it really just smacks of desperation when I see the same people spamming the different groups and forums I frequent with every single update they do. If you can make the promotion natural and do it via your own channels, then it will come off with far more integrity than just randomly badgering people to watch your videos. By building up a social media presence, with followers, it means the people who do follow you are more likely to be interested in your content than random people who might be viewing a link dropped into their favourite Facebook group or Subreddit.
 
Some people just want fame and money and millions of views out of their channel. I generally avoid looking at channels that I see posted all over pewdiepie/zoella/PointlessBlog and all the rest of the top selling youtubers.. If I see their name spouting 'I AMEK VIDEOS 2 :) CHECK ME OUT!!!' on 35 different videos then there is a 90% chance I will not even look at their channel...
But, as much as I hate this kind of thing.. I sometimes subtly advertise my channel;p In terms of..
If someone posts a video about something, I'll bring up maybe one of my videos that talks about it too, but not in an obnoxious way like 'Omg I did a video about this too!! (check it out)"
Not entirely sure how to word it haha..

Anyway.. I think advertising yourself in non obnoxious ways can be good, but don't go around a tonne of small channels asking for them to subscribe... I dont know about you but I hate that sh**..!
I don't advertise my channel pretty much at all. I think making a name for yourself on other social media is also a veryyy good idea, like twitter and tumblr, those kind of places...!

I think it is possible to get to the top places if you don't wh*r* yourself out, it can just take a bit longer..

I hate that too when people go to every viral video and post "check out my channel, like, and subscribe!" I approve those videos on my comments just to let other people see the pathetic attempt. I rarely post a video link in comments...

I don´t post links to my own videos on other channels videos! I try to make a good comment relevant to the video!
 
Thanks heaps everyone. Right now the video I'm putting out aren't engaging with my audience, it's very niche to people that want to know about Japan/Singapore. I guess once these travel videos are done I'll focus on making sure my channel is as engaging as possible and advertise/market in the right places without spamming.

Seeing some of your channels/posts are great, and it's good to see this YTTALK is active with people who actually want to have a discussion. I am also surprised nobody was negative, it's such a change of pace from let's say.. a reddit or something like that.

There is a distinct difference between being an @$$ and just sharing your content. I have a facebook where I share my content, and if it's relevant to someone else's page I will post my video there as well. Now if you just post everywhere and leave comments on other people's social media telling them to check you out... well... That is being an @$$.

I figure everyone that wants to find me will find me, not because I "red light district" myself out. But because they read one of my comments, or come across a video I shared in an appropriate thread.
 
When I started Youtubing 7 months ago I didn't know what to do in terms of promoting. So I did an Advert for the channel and put it on FB for my friends and family to see. That's it really. I earnt like 4 Subscribers by doing that and I was over the moon lol. By the time I got 28 Subscribers, It suddenly stopped for about a month. That's when I got off me bum and stepped into the world of yttalk to learn about how to improve my channel and video's. Soon after I joined Twitter and made a FB Page dedicated to my channel.
My video's came out more frequently and I started going to Comic-Cons. At the moment I'm around 58 Subscribers and I'm going on FB threads and tagging, friending other cosplayers that I found were in my video's or I met with at these cons.
Also on YouTube I searched for similar videos of the Comic-Con of the day I went and say "Hey I was there too, running around filming as Deadpool. If you wanna see, punch my Avatar" as well as anything that I really liked about their video.
That won me a few subscribers so far and hopefully they will enjoy the rest of my content and future Cons I go to... or maybe meet up with them too.
I'm also in the process of sorting out some business cards to promote my channel to hand out to people I interact with on my video's too. That might make a huge difference!
 
I haven't linked a video of mine to any social media or outside site besides the twitter for the channel and that was a messed up setting which I didn't even mean to do! Since I'm in the gaming space I just make sure to have a decent description, straight forward title & use the proper tags! I also make my own thumbnails which reflect the game / content and I try to keep the thumbnails evolving with each new one.
