YouTube's Image size limits

CramBoom

Classy Science
Why can't they increase these limits? 2mb is barely enough for an avatar, let alone a banner. They request a 2560x1440 image, but that is nigh impossible with those constraints

Also, I like to make my thumbnails in full HD, would it hurt to increase the file size to 5mb?

Is there a specific reason why they do this? They have google's servers, I don't think a couple more mb per image would be so detrimental. What are your thoughts?

save it as a jpeg with the quality on high.

Should still look fine and the file size will be far more manageable.

I'm totally assuming that you were using PNG. I <3 my pngs.

Why is your (at max) 800 x 800 picture more than 2mb? A normal image for that size in JPG should be about 800-1mb.

This is true, but jpeg is a lossy format, meaning when you save it as a jpeg it loses some quality. PNG and other lossless formats compress the image, but do not sacrifice quality in the process.

JPG doesn't lose its quality if you save under Web & Devices in PS. Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S.

I made my banner in photoshop using the 3d functions and not using effects and such sparingly and then saved it to .PNG and managed to keep it under 2mb... also all my thumbnails are 1280x720 and they're never over 1.5mb even though the limit it 2mb...

If your files are bigger than 2mb you're clearly just not compressing them enough when you save them in photoshop.

Also, if they made the limit 5mb it would take around 20-30mb's of data just to load a simple youtube search and something like 30-60mb's to load a youtube page.. (around 15-30mb on a mobile device) that's a lot of data that just doesn't need to be used on something like thumbnails and banners. You need to remember that not everyone has unlimited internet to play around with.

Really? Wow didn't know that, I'm going to go test that out. Thanks!

That is true. I don't have unlimited, but my bandwidth is very high.

Without going into great detail, I do and don't agree. I'm fine with the current limit but a higher one would be nicer for a higher res thumbs and stuff :)
