YouTubers Using Tragedy For Views

With the ice bucket challenge, I'm scared to think how many people are making these videos in hopes of getting some attention for their channel (or even just some cool points from their Facebook friends) and not donating a cent.

Same thing with the passing of Robin Williams. Plenty of people liked the guy and appreciated his talent, but are all the folks who made RIP videos really THAT heartbroken or just looking for a few more subscribers by using another human being's death to "mourn?"

None of this is keeping me up at night mind you. I'm a firm believer in what goes around comes around. Just curious to hear other thoughts on the matter.
 
The whole point of the ice bucket challenge is to raise awareness. If you are gonna earn something out of it then I think that sounds fine.

Isn't that just basically news and media? They use tragedies that happen around the world for revenue?
 
That's human nature really. We are more or less built to do something that benefits us in the long run. While there are people who are actually distraught on the passing of Robin Williams, there are also those that think. "Hey, Robin Williams just died. That's going to stir controversy. Let's make a video on it and take advantage of the news!".

That's not BAD by any means. As long as attention is brought to the subject, and they're at least respectable in their videos, that's fine by me.

As for the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge. The reason the act is there is specifically to bring attention to a cause. So the more people doing it. The more attention. It's what it was made for.

Take Extra Life as an example. A charity foundation that works with the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in order to raise money for children with Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis. We do an event every year that is like a marathon run. Though instead of running, you're live-streaming video games to raise money for the cause. The event is to raise awareness, and while it's nice to donate to the cause yourself, it's understandable that not EVERYONE can donate.

So raising awareness is a great way to show support.
 
Of course there are always gonna people doing this or that for attention, and not really for the original purpose of whatever it is they're doing. They're in the same boat as bandwagon hoppers. They're gonna hop on the latest trend just to try and get some views or whatever, eyeballs on them, and that's to be expected really. It's just something that I've come to expect already. If their evil plan of mass destruction works, then hey, fair game. If not, then hey, that's what they get for trying to leech off of whatever it may be.

Shift happens, bro.
 
I always feel kinda awkward making videos about people passing. That's why I never did one for Harold Ramis or Robin Williams. I don't know. Like you guys say I don't want to come off as someone posting about tragedy hoping it gets insane views.
 
Nobody owns the ice bucket challenge and many people are doing it just for attention and because the media have begun to tell everyone else about it - and some people are making charitable donations (to many different organisations) from doing it.

To even make a claim about who started it is not possible. But if people want to grab any attention, good luck to them.
 
Who cares? Both videos are still what they are... One for awareness and the other one for whomever wants to remember the guy
