Youtubers feelings like friends

I've heard it said that YouTube is so successful because we feel a connection/friendship with the creator, even though we don't actually know each other.

When you watch big youtubers, do you find that you feel connected to them? Do you feel like their friend, even though they don't know you, and you only know a curated version of them?

Do you try to be that "friend" to your audience? If so, how?

I dont feel the "friend connection" because ive never talked to any of the bigger guys i watch. I do tweet with some smaller NHL youtubers. I feel like i can relate to the bigger youtubers i watch a lot. Thats probably why enjoy watching them so much, its not even like they engage their fans with questions and stuff, but their banter and stuff is like something i would talk to my buddies about on a friday night. I think thats what makes the big guys get so big. They are good at getting viewers to relate to them.

If it was on a peer base, like people I met on this forum, I'd feel them as "friends" even if they were a bigger channel, but channels I follow no, it's a content viewer-provider relationship.

There are some channels that are really down-to-earth with their viewers. To that extent I feel I can relate to them. That being said, I've never felt like we were truly friends. Being friends with someone is a two way street. You have to communicate and get a response back, in order to be pals. Smaller channels are much more effective at coming off friendly because they can afford to respond to almost every comment. There's this unfortunate reality where once you grow in size. That stops being possible. Though, I'm sure many would if they could.

You're right that YouTube help us to connect with each other. But in case of big YouTuber it's different.I see most people say Big YouTubers don't reply to their comment or do some to other stuffs related to this cause they become famous.Bu honestly I am not agree with this topic. Now if you judge you will see 1.2-3.k comment on a big YouTuber video,so thing sometime is to possible to reply each of the comment. But I am not saying all YouTubers are the same. Some YouTuber may not try to connect with their audience cause they get famous, but for some it's because of it's not possible to do so :)

I think when I see those Q A videos, some people do like the snapchat vids or questions from instagram/twitter it feels more connected. Also when they make a video about themselves, they seem more relate-able. But otherwise no not really. Ideally with my channel, I like to reply back to my audience and say thanks for watching and stuff but I'm really REALLY small. I have no idea what its like for the big names that have hundreds of thousands of messages to look through and people to talk to ._.

I don't really base who I watch on whether or not I can connect to them.
I watch plenty of people whose opinions I disagree with, who I think may have a bad mindset, or who are just unrelate-able in general.
However, I still watch them because they're entertaining.
It's kind of like watching TV. I may hate the people and how they are acting, but the plot is so good that all of that doesn't matter.
