YouTube with a job

I have had a job most of my YouTube venture. The time I was in between jobs I was dedicating all my free time to YouTube just to keep my sanity.

I can't dedicate the time that I want to my hobby. I have been trying to get one video out for a very long time now, but just can't seem to finish it. (there is some blurring to do in that one). But, I love what I do job wise, and YouTube doesn't even begin to cover operating cost, so yeah. Work > YouTube life.

It would be interesting to know how many people make money exclusively from their youtube channel as a ratio to how many youtube channels exist. I suspect that less than one in a million actually achieve their dream.

In my (terribly humble) opinion the best formula for success is to youtube about your profession. I see some great digital marketing gurus using youtube very effectively, but also real estate agents, financial advisors, and apparently even a yacht broker!

If you use youtube to reinforce your credibility in your profession then it can be a great tool...if you are relying on it for your only source of income then that, as they say, is a tough road to hoe! For that reason I would say that if you are youtubing about gaming, make-up tutorials, or just general video blogging then the first priority should just be to have fun. If the views come avalanching in on you and you can make a living then great...but in the meantime don't give up your day job!
I would say youtube about your passion. Maybe I should be employed at what I'm passionate about, but that's not the case for everyone.

I've had a full time job ever since i started YouTube - it's a lot of work and of course there are sacrifices but for me it's the joy i get looking back at old videos that makes it worth while. That being said I definitely think having a full time job at the same time as trying to grow/run a YouTube channel takes something away from the channel. You obviously have less time to plan things out and having to do things on the computer after a long days work can be quite....challenging :)

What is your schedule like? :D

What is your schedule like? :D

I work Mon - Fri, and upload Sundays and Thursdays.

I plan the videos in the week, film on a Friday evening/Saturday and edit as quickly as possible (usually 3-4 hours). That's in an ideal world, sometimes Thursdays video gets done after work and is edited long into the night...i'm pretty sure my tired old face shows it haha!

Yeah, I work a 9-5 job during the week, and it's brutal with the YouTube channel, because I then spend one day a weekend filming, and then my evenings leading up to Thursdays (when we release) editing. I do enjoy the process though (if not obviously I wouldn't do it), but it's definitely exhausting. That being said, I'm switching to a part-time job soon though, because I'm finishing up my degree and I can't do school and work at the same time, so hopefully that will help ease the time crunch.

Yes job and kids come first even though the revenue from the channel goes mainly for the kids so kind of yin and yang situation here. To make the things worse my wife also has full time job so we have to share all the duties more or less equally (still I spend more time with YT channel and she with the kids). :)

I only work one day a week, and covering weeks holidays. So the rest is on my channel, that way the revenue from YT plus the minimum wage from work make up a small wage I can live on (without my own place though)

Basically I still earn more 1 day a week at work then I do 6 days a week for YT lol :) but it's totally worth the work
