Making a proper banner was annoyingly hard to do. Especially since the crop feature didn't let you crop exactly how you want it.

You could just download a template so you know where to put things, then when you upload it, it will be cropped the way you wanted it.

Just be wary of where your channel icon will be when you're designing the banner, so you don't block part of the design with your icon

This update has been long in the making, it's too late to complain about it now. I like it, particularly the ability to have a trailer showcasing my channel to anybody not subscribed. According to my stats, it's the one biggest puller in of subs(and subsequent views) on my channel.
The other thing to consider is that no longer are you limited by any lack of html or other coding knowledge(I'm not sure how the old layouts worked) to get yourself something professional looking. Now with a smart banner you'll look just like the professionals, so it's all the more important to get that branding right.
Basically, most of the old excuses are out the window and everyone starts with a clean slate, aesthetically speaking. You can organise your channel as you see fit - a playlist here, recent uploads there... long story short you lose aesthetics but you gain so much more so stop being so negative and embrace it - the longer you tell yourself the One Channel sucks, the longer your One Channel will reflect this as you've not put the effort in. And it's here to stay!

I'm totally not stalking you or anything, but I prefer the old layouts, they were all much more personal. However (as I'm sure all of us have experienced many times over) once a company gets an idea in their head they won't back down from it, even if it's crap.MoD said something here
The trailer is a good feature though, if they had just included that on the old layout then I'd be happy (I say this when I STILL haven't added a trailer to my channel xD)

Wait until YouTube changes it again and everyone will be clamoring to keep this current layout. Change is scary and evil.
