Youtube thumbnails, how do they work?

Sorry if the title is a bit missleading.

What i am trying to ask is how you actually gain the ability to use thumbnails on your videos. Because i can't use it atm, but someone with 5 subs more seems to be able to use em'

Is there any requitements you have to meet(Obviously it is) to be able to add thumbnails to your videos. Would really appreciate an answer.

If im not mistaken you have to have a certain number of videos uploaded then the feature is activated.. i have a personal account.. (for my sons basketball games).. i have the page monetized with adsense.. and then it kicked in for me after i reached so many videos...

Monetization enabled account. (Mostly, they're supposed to be rolling this out to everyone but I don't think they have yet.)
 
There is a selected option where you can click monetize my videos or channel. That gives you features such as scheduled uploading and custom thumbnails.
