Confirmed. The most important thing is "relative audience retention". Don't worry so much about video length. Wether you're putting out 2, 4, or 6 minutes videos, what will have you show up in suggested is having a higher relative audience retention than other videos in the same category.[DOUBLEPOST=1445260793,1445260654][/DOUBLEPOST]

This does matter but it's a tiny part of the algorithm. Let's say I had a 3 minute video. I'd rather have an average view time of 2:40 seconds with no comments than an average view time of 2:35 seconds with tons of comments. That said, if audience retention is the same on two videos the number of engagements will cause that more "engaged" video to be promoted.

This works the same way for search results, at least across a couple of my channels with semi-viral videos (millions of views) that have the same subject and target the same search term. When I search them they are ranked right in accordance to their relative audience retention.

On a different subject (but still related to comments), I've had it happen on more than one occasion that very popular videos that I have engaged in comment discussions on end up featuring one of my videos in their suggested sections. It's happened too often to be coincidence so I'm guessing that the algorithm, on some level, takes into account any cross-interaction between channels and possibly uses it partly as a basis for ranking. There could obviously be other reasons not related to my comment threads on other videos but it seems to happen fairly often.

Do you still see your videos in the suggested section of those particular videos, when your browser is in incognito (when you aren't logged into your account)? It may be that you're seeing them because you're logged into your account and the videos belong to you.

I've been studying the suggested video algorithm for years. I know enough to log in from a different account/browser (and also double check on my phone). :)

I didn't ask that though. I asked if you still saw the same videos when you weren't logged in at all to your account. Not into another account or logged in, but with another browser. :)

I probably wasn't clear when I wrote "different account/browser", so let me explain. I'll typically go to Firefox where I don't have a google account set up. Then I'll double check on my phone's CM browser, which also isn't hooked up to an account. Then I'll check my phone's YT app which is connected (obviously) just to see if it's the same. I only do all of this when I notice a major change in analytics. You have to understand, I'm a little nuts when it comes to following which videos my videos are suggested videos for. Back when they were making the major algorithm changes in 2011-2012 I was always one of the first to know when an algorithm change happened (or at least the first to post about it on the old official Youtube partner forum). That's because I vigilantly check the suggested videos traffic source and then check those videos to see exactly where my video is placed and whether it changes from day to day.

I know it's nuts but that's who I am LOL.

That all being said, typically I see the same suggested videos either way (except for the recommended videos).

Thanks for sharing that info with me. That's awesome though. I learned something new. :)
