YouTube red is scammy

I cant express how scammy of a service youtube red is. They made it so now you only get exclusive content if you get youtube red. Thats so scammy, they make youtubers make Behind the scenes and extra content so only youtube red people can see it. There is already adblock but they put it in there anyway to try to get more people. Is it a good service?... Yes. But its so scammy

To be honest, I don't watch any of the channels/talent that were listed has having special content in the future. People can see the preliminary list here:

Yeah, the responses to this whole thing are just amazing to me. So many people completely unwilling to read anything other than buzzfeed level soundbytes. It is really not that hard to grasp. YouTube is shifting the ad inventory that is already not full away from people willing to pay not to be exposed to it. The negative will only be perceived by the average user if the Red subscription base is enormous because technically it would mean non-subs will see more ads than before. But the group isn't going to be big enough to ever notice the difference.

And since this is previously an unmonetized source, they can invest that money into exclusive content that wouldn't exist otherwise. But it's a scam, clearly.

I don't understand why people can't be bothered to actually educate themselves on a topic before pontificating on it.
 
Exclusive content seems to be a way for Google to get more out of red than just their cut of the revenue. Exclusive content as a way to leverage the red subscriber base into its own content platform could be a very shrewd move for Google in the long term.

YouTube is paying the creators to appear in the first batches of exclusive content. That is how YouTube is helping get Red launched. I'm sure they are paying them big bucks and YouTube won't recover those costs on the actual videos. It is a long-term play to gain paid subscribers.

Good point! To piggy back on your point, there are obviously more videos than there are ads to be placed on them. Theoretically, the more people who opt in for the Paid Subscription plan means that there should be more ad inventory available for non-paid subscribers to see =)
 
I don't really see it as a bad service, it's pretty much saying if you want premium service then now you have the option of paying that. The same channels you watch will continue to upload on the regular youtube it's just additional content. And for those die-hard subscribers they would be interested to see that additional content.

Was your post in response to me? I'm not disagreeing with anything you say, but I'm not sure how it's relevant to what I said. I'm saying that exclusive content is currently used as an incentive to sign up, but long term it may be the main reason to sign up (if exclusive content gains traction in a big way). That's when I'd consider it a separate platform, instead of just a way to stop seeing adverts. I haven't stated an opinion on whether this is good or bad, just that it seems likely that creating a paid content platform could factor into Google's long term goals.

Yep. That's why there is very little bad about YouTube Red. YouTube doesn't have enough ads to serve all views. There are certainly some capped out search terms and demographics I'm sure, so it's not a linear kind of thing where they can just dump the ads anywhere else, but there's so little chance of this actually negatively affecting anyone that I'm surprised at the outcry. Or I would be surprised if the average internet user wasn't more apt to share a cat photo than an important political article.

A scam? Are you kidding? How is charging for a superior service a scam? It's literally the business model of practically EVERY BUSINESS EVER.
 
The service is fine. Youtube will do what ever it needs to do to stay relevant. I think its a good move by them. It brings more light to youtube which brings more people to watch youtube. Which, lastly brings more potential people to enjoy our content. We can't do anything about it so there no point in fighting it. I'm looking forward to it.
