Which is better in today's Youtube environment.

Make a video and pray and hope somewhere down the line Youtube doesn't demonize it or just create a website on the back end to redirect traffic. I am talking about a gaming channel.

Also even if it gets monetized you are not making that much anymore.

I have been thinking of creating a website about gaming and having my videos from the Youtube channel on it and then doing affiliate marketing techniques on the website. Versus counting on Youtube revenue and just doing my own thing and not worrying about being demonetized.

Just curious anyone's thoughts on this.

Regardless of what you do about monetizing your videos with adsense you should make a website for your content. There are multiple benefits to having your own separate website:

  • enhanced SEO (with proper articles, at least a 300-word optimized snippet, or simply importing YouTube autocaptions as an article for starters)

  • Ability to sell ad space, post affiliate links, or sell your own products

  • A backup THAT YOU OWN where people can find you if YouTube decides to make a change that affects you negatively or shut you down

  • Varied formats for consuming your information (some people don't like watching videos or can't watch them because they're at work, etc. so they prefer to read articles)

  • MOST IMPORTANT = GATHER EMAILS. Emails are the key to making an online business work. The conversion rates for products, engagement rates, and share rates of emails blow every other social network out of the water
I've set this up for another YouTuber and we have built in marketing funnels that sell $1k per month in courses. Pretty awesome, and this is just the beginning. He's told me that he's more excited about watching his email list grow than his YT subscriber list now...

You could set up a killer email funnel sequence creatively selling affiliate products that make sense and make 10x more than what Adsense would ever pay.

Which is better than nothing. Youtube revenue or doing a website?

how much would something like cost to set up?

If you use mailchimp it is free for the first few thousand subscribers ( I can't remember exactly how many).
I started gathering email addresses just a couple of months ago. I set up a website using wordpress and then found a free plugin that connects with my mail chimp account so that every time somebody clicks on "Subscribe" on my website the name is added to my mailchimp list.
The whole process cost me just a few bucks for the website name. I'm really useless at understanding websites and IT stuff, so it took me a few hours to figure out how to set it all up, but now it works perfectly.

I can completely identify with this. The exciting thing about email lists is that you can see exactly who has subscribed, and then who has looked at the email when you send it out.
