I'm putting together a course for this and this is straight from it. The formatting of this isn't perfect but this system is gold!! Cheers

When it comes to keyword research tools for Youtube I haven't found anything that spectacular.
BUT I can give you a strategy to finding HOT keywords manually.
First off, download the chrome extension called, VidIQ. Once enabled, this tools will show stats alongside the youtube search results and single videos.
NO IDEAS FOR KEYWORDS?
Here's the technique -
1) Find a handful of competitor's channels that have a moderate sized subscriber base (make sure they aren't the big dawg in the niche).
- Do this by using the related channel feature on the right side panel of a YouTube channel page.
- Copy the URL to a spreadsheet
2) Now look through the videos of each channel
- Go straight to the bottom and start at their OLDEST videos if possible
3) Scroll up through their videos and look for one that performed significantly better than their adjacent videos.
- Click through each high performing video and copy the URL to a spreadsheet... DON'T watch the video (it's so easy to get lost in the Tube that is YouTube)
- Look in the top right corner of the YouTube page and you'll see stats given by VidIQ. Check their Views/hr stat to get an idea of how it’s performing organically. I aim for videos with 1 + View/hr but what is good depends on your monetization strategy and industry.
- If the video isn't performing to your standards. Delete it from the list
MINING THEIR KEYWORDS: Amassing a Keyword List
You should now have a good sized list of high performing videos that got a significant amount of views despite the channel not having a huge subscriber base. Time to reverse engineer these!
1) Create a New spreadsheet for each video you analyze
2) Copy and Paste the title of the video
3) Look at the Keyword tag area of VidIQ and record any variations they are tagging with.
- VidIQ will show you an estimate of their position for each keyword tag they have! Make specially note of this as these, along with the title keywords are the hot keywords you want to be targeting.
KEYWORD And COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Now we should have a list of keyword groups consisting of related keywords and modifiers.
- Type in the keyword (For Each broad Keyword)
- Add the autocomplete phrases to your spreadsheet in the appropriate category
- Quick scan results
- Pay attention to the following metrics
- VidIQ Metrics
- Times in title
- If low, means it will be easier to rank
- Add related words to your list
- The rising tab will help distinguish trends based off of Google Trend data. Add these to your list if they if they fit into categories.
- You can generally ignore the quick stats as the search volume is based on google keyword planner data. The keyword planner can help give you some indication but is not always useful. This is useful if you are trying to rank your video in Google results
- Total views of each video
- You are looking for moderate to high views
- Check the DATE Published!
- 100,000 views is not as significant when it was published 7 years ago… although that’s still not a bad view rate depending on your industry.
- Subscribers for each channel
- If they have low subscribers it will be easier to rank
- What is low subs?
- Depends on Industry
- < 30,000 is a good rule of thumb for low comp.
- Total results
- Doesn’t play a huge part but if it is under 50,000 it may equate to weak competition
- Results Consistency
- How consistent are the views as you scroll down the search?
- If consistent down the first five videos, then this is good!
- If only the first video has a ton of views… this could be a sign that other factors are affecting their views (paid search, bot views, other unknown external traffic, OR part of a video sequence)
- Click through to the top 2-3 videos
- Views per hour
- For my niche I aim for 1+ views per hour
- If the VPH is very low, the video is fairly new, and has a ton of views, with low channel subs… they probably bought views and this video won’t give you a good estimate of how many organic searches are being made for this topic
- Average View Duration
- Don’t pay attention to the percentage but do some mental math to see the average time watched in minutes.
- YouTube doesn’t care about percentages… only the total amount of time you kept someone on their platform.
- Subs driven and engagements
- Indication of how the audience is responding to the content (well done content)
- Really high? May be hard to beat
- Social & SEO Stats
- Don’t worry about these
- They make a difference but it is small
- However these will still be discussed later in the video
- Keyword Tags
- Add other tags that aren’t already on your list in which the video is ranking for
- QUICK scan of video content
- Fast forward to random parts and ask yourself “can I produce better content?
- If yes, good
- If no, you still target this kw but may not rank over this particular video. If no to most of the videos…

- Give Keyword Rank
- Based on your observation, give your keyword a difficulty rank
- HOT
- MEDIUM
- MILD
- Focus on building content for the medium and hot keyword topics first
- BONUS
- If you are determined to keep mining
- Repeat the process with the mild and medium phrases
- Continue to search long-tail versions until you find lower competitive results that still have decent search volume.
- Most likely will have to settle for lower VPH
- Content Buckets
- Group Related Keyword Phrases that are highly compatible and related
- We will plan on combining these into one video and using variations of each keyword in the titles
- Diagram Content Flow
- Determine if one topic can lead into another
