Youtube has gotten corny

Part of it is that they're probably running out of good ideas. Being popular so long you run out of things to do. Why do you think all anyone is doing nowadays are dumb challenges and tag videos?

Plus they are geared towards 9 year olds I guess. They find a lot of things funny.

Nah, for real though, I really only laugh when I watch Shane Dawson, at least from the mainstream YouTubers. A few others make me laugh too, but they're not the most mainstream.

I just don't know how you can run out of this to talk about when you live an everyday life. I seem to always have something new to talk about like every freaking day. They are just probably being lazy, making daily vlogs, and not really getting creative with their videos. Like the challenge videos are quite stupid unless it's something really funny. I'm just waiting for them to just die out so I can steal the spot light LOL! Oh wellzer..

Aren't they portraying characters though? How can you 'be yourself' when you're acting? Think Nostalgia Critic, Doug is portraying a character. It's not like Christian Bale is really Batman, he's just acting the character.
 
These youtubers are changing up their their style to appeal to a younger audience since their old audience grew up.
 
Sometimes with success and deadlines comes safety and predictability. Some of these people are probably burned out and on autopilot at this point.
 
I see where this is coming from and it was something that stopped me from starting a channel for quite some time. My gut feeling tells me that the main YouTube audience is quite young. Yes, others also use it but more when they get sent there from somewhere else (Links Facebook friends sent them for example). So many of my friends (I am 38 now) are totally unaware of what the subscribe function does in YouTube. Also because even if they would subscribe, they would not have the time to watch "all that stuff".

So I first looked at the German YT scene and to me so many channels just weren't funny. When at the same time people in the comments seemed to laugh their asses off. There is no way I could appear authentic with that style of humour when I don't even find it funny myself. I probably have to add that I think that on average this might even be more common in the German scene. Just my feeling.

There is nothing wrong with going for that larger audience/market and when you have a large user base like the YouTuber you mentioned then they most likely simply have more views when they go for the younger folks.

Personally I still want to do funny videos and vlogs but still try to stay within "my range". Still testing out a few things and looking at the stats. I was positively surprised how many people liked the "90s video" as this gave me hope that there IS an audience which is interested in watching this kind of stuff. And I think some people here in the forums also showed that you can grow a channel without going simply for the largest (and maybe easiest to catch) demographic group.

Does anyone know the movie "Idiocracy"? Sometimes I fear we'll end up there. 500 years from now the most popular movie at the cinema will just show a naked butt farting for 90 minutes. And everyone in the cinema will laugh nonstop. *sigh*
