The upside to the shorter video, as most people mention as better, is that you'll have more videos to put out if you chop up a 30 min vid into pieces. Gives you time to gather and/or film new material without running out of ideas too quickly.

Thanks for your explanation. I have thought that the length of the videos would also influence rankings, but I'm sure it's a combination of both.
 
Not so much the quality. Id say try and stick to 10mins to 15mins max.
The majority of people who watch youtube are watching while on the go. so they may not have long to watch all of the content. It also gives you a big challenge to hold their attention that entire time. Some may have loads of views for hour long videos but that may not mean they watched the entire video.

Likewise if you shorten the video not only will you hold views but if the content is good they will want to watch more if they can and so click on other videos increasing the view count on them
 
It would have to be extremely high quality for me to watch. Extremely. I have trouble finishing an episode of TV, so....
