It's honestly hard to tell. Many YouTubers come off as honest people, but several have been proven to be liars and manipulators. I'm certain there is a certain amount of them that DO use those donations to help them produce videos as promised, but I'm also just as sure that there are those that don't. It's very hard to see if they actually used those funds for good and not bad. Although, if they make videos showing that they actually bought new equipment/software with the money they were given to improve their videos that would be one way. Whether it's wrong or not is controversial in itself. Personally, I don't like relying on anyone so I usually try and do things on my own. However, some people may be having a way tougher time in life and may need some support. Then again if their lives are really that bad then I would suggest putting YouTube on hold and getting a real job. YouTube is an investment if you really take it serious and it doesn't always pay off so you should have a back up plan just in case. At least that's what I think. For me it's just a hobby and I prefer to invest more on something like school.
