YouTube Channels using "Related Channels" vs. "Popular Channels"

On the right side of your your channel's page, YouTube will decide to display one of two potential categories of additional channels on your profile if you opt into the channel recommendations program (can be adjusted here) - "Related Channels," or "Popular Channels."

In addition to that list, YouTubers have the option to add their own selection of channels in something called, "Featured Channels." I'm not going to be talking about Featured Channels in this thread, but I thought I'd mention it since other threads I've found on the Internet were confusing the three categories.

Related channels seem to have a list of channels that have similar content, and often contain channels of similar sizes.

Popular channels seem to have a list of huge channels within a similar or same YouTube genre (in my case, that would be music).

Here are screenshots I've seen within the violin/music genre for those who may be a little confused about what I'm talking about:

I've noticed a recent switch within the last few weeks where the "related channels" list has been swapped out for the "popular channels" list for most YouTubers who have less than ~50k subscribers. Also, the related channels list is much shorter (around 3 channels listed) for YouTubers with 50k subscribers than for those YouTubers with 100k+ subscribers.

I think this is an odd change since I thought the related channels actually were fairly relevant, and I've found some interesting similar-sized channels through the related channels list. The popular channels list contains a bunch of stuff that I'm not interested in clicking on.

Has anyone else noticed this change within their YouTube channel's genre? Do you think YouTube might just be resetting what is labeled as "related," or do you think this is a new change? I remember having "Popular Channels" listed when I was a smaller channel, but I think it changed to "Related Channels" after I had a few hundred subscribers. To me, this new change seems like a step backwards for YouTube, but who knows!

Furthermore, what's the point of smaller YouTubers opting into the recommended channels program if YouTube is only recommending channels on bigger channels, anyway?

Hmmmmmm..... I'm not going to change my current settings or anything, but I thought it was an odd change. ^^

Hmm. you're right. I just checked my channel home page and I have only one related channel listed. It just happens to be Unbox Therapy however which is great to have on my channel page. I used to see around 3 related channels. Maybe they are trying something new.

Mine was also with just 1 related channel for about 2 days, and then it switched over to "Popular channels." :o I guess it might be affecting more than just music folks!
