He confirms that watch time is much more important than view-count.

10% of a one hour video is still a longer view time than 100% of a 3 minute video.

Watch-time is often misunderstood as Audience Retention where rather it's a combination of retention and views. You can have 100 views of a 10 minutes video at 100% retention which would be 1,000 minutes. But if you had 10,000 views on a 10 minute video at 10% retention is still 1,000 minutes. If it were just retention, Vine channels would always be top of the search. 7 second videos make it pretty hard to have low retention.

That's really where the importance of subscribers comes in. They're your fans and are more likely to watch longer on each video. So you get a burst of high retention views giving a good pump of watch time on a video in a very short turnaround.

But for those who don't make 1 hour videos (I don't see many who do) unless you're bigger on YT I really don't see the point of 1 hour videos.
So this example doesn't really apply to many people, yes even though it's the figures same I don't see many who do 1 hour long videos and if there are any small channels who do I'd love to see the retention of of the user on that video.
